I have a 10x10x10 foot, barn style, gambrel roof shed. I would like to add an 8x16 foot addition. Can anyone make some suggestions on styles (lean to, salt box)? I need it for storing lawn and pool equipment. Thanks all!

Gambrel Roof Shed - Good idea or no?

I'm in the early phase of drawing out and planning a backyard reno. One of the key things myself and the SO wants is a dedicated workout space that will free up the garage and other areas of the house (garage has a 7.5' ceiling after it was drywalled, so OHP is a no-go).
In the yard, we have about 10' wide x 12' deep that we plan on carving out for a concrete slab.
http://i.imgur.com/W583sLa.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/NpJ68K8.jpg
I figure 10' across is plenty wide for 7' olympic bar with some "wiggle/bounce" room when dropped from overhead. I haven't checked with the township yet, but I planned for a 5' ordinance on each side along our property line. Hopefully it's less, but I'm not holding my breath.
As for the structure itself, I'm interested in a Gambrel roof, mostly for the added storage up top and the potential to throw a few stringers across the wall-tops to hang gymnast rings from. Has anyone gone this route? Any problems?
(For anyone unfamiliar with Gambrel roof styles: https://www.bylerbarns.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Barn.jpg)
Most pre-fab Gambrel sheds seem to have the option for a "floor kit". I presume this is extra 2x4's and some plywood? I presume I would not bother with this option since I have the slab that would be covered in horse stall mats. I'm also open to the idea of having someone build it custom, but unsure if there would be a savings in cost there.
Finally, insulation and ventilation! We plan on using this all year, so a good roof is required. Insulation would need to be added after the fact; I'm sure I can handle that myself. For the warmer summer days, the doors would be open, but I reckon I'll toss a fan in the corner as well.
Have I missed anything? If anyone has gone a similar route, I'd love to see photos or albums! Using the sub's search for "gambrel" didn't find anything, so I want to make sure I'm not crazy going this route.

Need help framing a crows beak (prows beak) onto a gambrel roof backyard shed.

We’ve followed the instructions purchased from cheapsheds to construct an 8X12 gambrel roof shed, and as a final component, my wife is asking for a crows beak. The instructions provided, don’t offer much more than “trial and error” as the suggested compound angles for the framing, and well. I’m out of my league. Do any of you carpenters have any suggestions?

Overall shingle style came up real nice and the windows also came out real nice. Align all the components, making sure the shed roof had a symmetrical appearance. Including shelving, workbenches, cabinets, toolboxes, and hangers.

It may seem obvious, but it would surprise you how many people fail to consider this. Using a reciprocating saw you can chop door panel out from the back side then trim the front section left on bottom front with a circular saw. Build the header and trimmer studs as shown in diagram. Drive toenail into the sill plate at a 45-degree angle, but do not drive it fully at this time or you will move the joist off of layout mark.

Structural Integrity of Gambrel Style Shed Roof

I have a fairly large shed with a gambrel style truss roof. 4 truss and 3 gusset plates. It’s about 20ft long with 2 by 4’s spaced 25 inches apart. Half of it is used for storage, like an attic, other half completely open. My question is, if I remove most of the 2x6 girders supporting the storage space, leaving only a couple feet for storage at the end, does that lateral support compromise very much structural integrity? Ideally, I would like to add insulation and finish with drywall/plywood to the roof so it’s completely open. Should I keep a couple lateral supports or will it be fine with an added ceiling, plus occasional snow?
Thanks!!

Intake vent for gambrel shed roof

Hey guys, I'm about to reroof my shed because it has a serious leak and a lot of rotted sheathing. I was planning on installing a ridge vent for ventilation but since it's a gambrel style roof, there's no overhang to install soffit vents.
I was looking at drip edge vents where you cut a slot 5" up from the drip edge. Would this work or are these vents prone to leaks?
I have two windows in the shed but Im not certain if that's enough intake to match the exhaust by the ridge vent.
Thanks for the help, first time doing a roof

Semi-Leveling a Ridge Side (Temporary) - Info / Material

I just bought some dense property in Northern NH. About 27 acres. We are going to be leveling certain areas for temporary purposes for a 24' x 12' x 8' gambrel roof shed and a 32' travel trailer. There are a lots of dips and huge boulders so I am thinking of purchasing a larger quantity of filler as a temporary platform.
What do you all recommend for material? The lowest dip is about 1' to 2' but can be as long or wide as 15 feet. Definatly not loam, crushed stone might be an options but I feel like it's not the best options.

Saltbox Backyard Shed Making Schematics 12x10 - How To Ensure You Do It Right

Saltbox Backyard Shed Making Schematics 12x10 - How To Ensure You Do It Right

Before installing ceiling joists to the jacks, sight along hip rafter to ensure it is straight. Mark where each edge brace would go and pre-drill holes before attaching with screws. Supports for joists should incorporate some form of damp protection break. Attach blocks along the perimeter of floor to prevent wall from sliding off base as you lift it into position. And you can hide your screw holes under or behind project (https://sheddrafts.com/8x8-gambrel-roof-shed-plans-blueprints) with it. Lock adjacent wall frames together with screws to enhance rigidity of the utility outbuilding frame. Adjust floor frame so corners are aligned with edges of plywood, then fasten plywood using 8d nails.
Get rid of any random tree branches or shrubbery that could mess with walls of your shed. You would surely be surprised at how a basic storage area will look once built using a large shed plan tried and tested by master builders for several years. Put stringers side-by-side and be sure that they're perfectly even. Composition architectural shingles over felt paper is most common roofing out there. An out-of-square start would haunt you through the rest of project, from doors and windows to trim and roofing. With an awning in place, you could sit outside in shade after finishing some work.
Outdoor sheds are primarily utility structures. The support could be a level concrete base or possibly a timber sub-floor. Angled door cross trim pieces add to the décor. Install (this page) blocks before the finished fascia and nail through subfascia and into ends of the cross blocks. Connect the framing for site-built trusses with plywood gussets glued and screwed to the joints. Examine each piece of 5x4" decking and install each with better side up. Another advantage that a gambrel roof has over an A-frame roof is that it saves a lot of roofing material. The astragal is molding that covers gap between a pair of doors when closed.
Commence nailing the bottom plates to floor beginning as close as possible to corner studs at all four corners. Make sure girts are level. Light-up your patio outbuilding interior with some garden shed roof windows. Security windows are horizontal, very narrow, non-opening and usually set very high on walls of the shed. You can have one diagonal brace and two horizontal battens or two braces and three battens, depending on design. Designing a slant roof outbuilding is extremely easy for woodworking enthusiasts. Cripple studs are fastened between the trimmers beneath the door and window openings. Flashings are important in controlling moisture in wall assemblies.
The doors will need space for hinges and easy movement to open and shut doors properly. Brace them in place both directions. Check if there are protruding screws and fix this issue. Lookouts extend from the first rafter inside the gable wall out over the plates to support overhanging barge rafter. Composite shingles are more durable than asphalt shingles and are resistant to mold and algae damage. Add your roof shingles starting from bottom first and work your way up. Over each opening a lintel must be added to support weight of roof.

Re-shingling gambrel shed roof: how to handle bends?

My plan is to replace the worn out, crumbling 3 tab shingles on a small shed with Owens Corning Duration architectural shingles, which were leftover from another project.
This is a gambrel style shed (kind of like a little barn, with two slopes on both sides) that is partially under a tree. The shingles are a lot more worn on the tree side, especially at the bend between the two slopes. Picture here: http://imgur.com/a/OksXCuv
I was curious about the correct way to shingle the bend where the slopes transition. Same way as the rest of the roof? Any special way of bending the shingles? Also on the more worn shaded side, should I use any extra nails, roofing cement, etc?

Timber framed extension to house. Tying in to existing structure or??

I have done some timber framing, mostly self taught with lessons from my grandfather to plant the seed 30+ years ago.
I did build a gambrel roofed shed (10X16, regular 2 X 6 studded walls, red cedar shake siding) and then a 15 foot diameter gazebo with knee braced posts, 4 X 6 fir top plates lap jointed and pinned, all topped by a timber frame roof structure with some timber bolts at the king post and collar tie joints.
I want to tackle a house add on and some questions come to mind.
Building it from foundation to roof is no real mystery but if I wanted to join it together with the main house structure, this seems problematic.
Just connecting it with a breezeway would make it more private but make more of a chore

This also helps you square the roof trusses. Cut the ridge board to length and mark rafter positions on it. The spacing between trestles depends on whether they support a timber subfloor or deck boards.

All these lumps trying to squeeze through pulley blocks adds a lot of friction. However, if you plan to store a riding lawn mower, you need to take its size into account. It is not too long and shows you the detail and quality that you could expect in this outbuilding build. The pallet boards were then slice to meet the full dimensions needed for door, minus the metal sheets dimensions.

Leaving additional space to accommodate new equipment. Note weak points that you can reinforce in a bit. Then nail on shingles according to manufacturer's instructions. In this case we would be using a 2x8 ridge board.
https://shedconstructionplans.com/8x8-gambrel-storage-shed-plans-blueprints
This step by step woodworking project is about large shed roof plans. Improper budgeting is one of biggest reasons that construction projects run into trouble and even though a shed is a smaller project it is still important to know the costs before starting. That would be where you make door so that you don't introduce any strange warping. All in all, to me it's not a lot of work for added benefits.

If you live in a neighborhood like mine, chances are pretty good your neighbors have had their sheds broken into. Leave no gaps between the components for a professional result. Install hinges to gate and install to shelter.
https://sheddrafts.com/gambrel-barn-shed-plans-blueprints
This is very important because this determines siding and walls later on. Mark ledgers to length and square marks with a framing square. This makes it difficult to open and close doors. Shed roofs could be virtually any pitch, as long as the rafters span from wall to wall. Nail bottom plates to the sub-floor where possible. Unclamp the plates and lay them out on your work area.

What Type of Roof do you need

Building a new home and you aren’t sure what type of roof you want to install? This confusion is understandable because there are many types of interesting options from which you can choose. At Lynch Bros Roofing, we have worked with a large number of homeowners and understand the difficulty that finding the best roof can trigger. So if you’re ready to work with the best roofing companies Cedar Rapids, Iowa has to offer, make sure to read through this list to find a great roof.

Gable Roof – Good for Larger Homes

If you are creating a large home with multiple stories, you may want to consider gable roofing. As this type of roof is among the most popular types in the world, it shouldn’t be too hard to find roofing companies who will do this installation for you. And gable roofs provide many benefits and a minimum of downsides that make them perfect for a large number of different homes. However, they do have some downsides that you must consider before adding one to your home.
First of all, gable roofs are very tall and shed water and snow very easily. As a result, you won’t have to worry about damage to these roofs caused by pooling water and stagnant snow. And the tall nature of these roofs allows for better ventilation and better mold and mildew management. However, they can be very hard to protect against hurricane and winds, and if they experience this type of damage, may collapse if not properly repaired. Thankfully, this problem is fairly rare for most homeowners.

Hip Roof – A Uniquely Sloped Choice

If a gable roof seems too simple for your home, you may want to consider a hip roof. This roof design utilizes equally-sized slopes on all four sides of your home. They come together at the top and create a little ridge that can be used for decorative purposes. You don’t see these roofs as often as you might notice gable roofs, but they are still quite common. And they have benefits and disadvantages that make them worth your time and which could make them not good for your home as well.
First of all, hip roofs are more stable than gable roofs. The four-side design helps to make them stabler and easier to keep upright, ensuring that your home is stable and secure for years to come. However, this design also makes them easier for wind protection because they are more durable than gable roofs under this type of pressure. That said, hip roofs are also much more expensive to get from roofing companies and require more building materials – and their complexity makes them prone to leaks.

Gambrel Roof – Slightly Different Slopes

If the equally-sized nature of the hip roof seems a little too symmetric for your design needs, you can choose a Gambrel roof. This roof is similar to a mansard because both utilize two different slope levels. However, the mansard has four sides with matching angles while the Gambrel has two sides. Typically called a barn roof, this option is a good choice for certain roofing situations and can provide your home with the protection that it needs to stay strong and secure for years to come.
First of all, the Gambrel’s differing slopes creates space for an attic that can be used for storage and other things. Gambrels are also easier to frame out and quite simple to build, in contrast to the somewhat complex mansard. And they can create an old-fashioned look that may be appropriate for some homeowners. However, these roofs also tend to get damaged under extreme pressure, such as that caused by snow or wind, and may need windows to add a little extra light to the house.

Flat Roof – A Surprising Option

Although roofing companies once installed many flat roofs, this option is nowhere near as popular as it was in the past. That said, there are times when this type of roof may be beneficial. As its name implies, this type of roof is much flatter than others and appears completely level. However, it does have a slight slope to manage water and snow. This design is often common on many commercial buildings but may be a good choice for homes that don’t have a lot of money involved in their construction.
That’s because flat roofs are among the easiest and least expensive types of roofs to install on a home. And they are also a great place to install a roof patio or a garden, which can make your home a unique place to visit and live. You can also more easily install solar panels on these roofs to save yourself a lot of electrical costs. Unfortunately, these roofs are very susceptible to damage from water and snow and leak very heavily if not properly maintained. This maintenance often counters their inexpensive installation.

Butterfly Roof – A Gorgeous V-Shaped Roof

Lastly, you may want to get a butterfly roof for your home if you want a unique angle that you may not see in a lot of home’s. When properly installed, this V-shaped roof will look a lot like a butterfly taking off – hence the name. If you are clever with your painting, you can create a home-sized creature that will be unique in your area and attract much attention. However, you can also get many benefits with this type of roof without having to paint it up in a decorative way.
First of all, the larger angles used in this type of roof can allow you to use large windows to create unique looks and styles for home. When used properly, you can even save yourself money on your heating and cooling bills. And this design is also very friendly for water collection and solar panels, helping to cut down on your expenses even further. However, roofing companies also warn that this type of roof is fairly expensive and difficult to install and may leak without proper drainage.

4x4 or 6x6 skid foundation for 12x16 gambrel style

So I'm in the final stretch of finishing my gravel base for my skids for the shed. I'm contemplating to do either 4, 4x4s or 3, 6x6s for my foundation on top of 3/4 gravel. I live in a heavy winter area but looking only to store the normal stuff tools, house shit, extra whatever maybe a snowmobile if I ever get one that has reverse. we are having a baby in April and the 800sf cabin will not accommodate all that we have plus a newbie. The 4x4s even with 4 of them is 2-300 dollars cheaper but am I losing stability if I do that or should I go with the 6x6? 4's are like 70ish per I believe the 6's are 150 a pop all at 16' .
Also deciding to do either 2x4 trusses or 2x6. If I do 2x4 I will go for 16"oc spacing. The plans I have call for 2x6 at 24"oc spacing. Since its gambrel style I'm not super worries about snow load since the top section is a much smaller footprint than the entire roof due to the gambrel style and the pitch on the second angle being so steep. Any insights will be appreciated.

Stealth Cabin SL

Thanks for letting me join. Someone on anther Reddit invited me over. I am a long time off gridder that loves sharing off grid and stealth cabin designs and plans for DIY builders and this is my latest design. Always happy to answer questions in the comments.
Stealth Cabin SL: Could you live in 64sqft?
This is another of the micro cabin designs for a package of plans I am putting together for emergency housing units. This one utilizes an 8x8 gambrel bar roof shed design that can be put up and taken apart quickly and flat packed to make it portable in a truck. It is shown with a full size bed, wet bath (toilet shower combo). kitchenette with 2 burner stove, sink, toaster oven, Alpicool fridge and storage.
There is storage under the bed and there will be storage behind that entertainment center at the end of the bed. There would be room for a small desk and wood stove in the single bed model.
Everything you need to survive in just 64sqft!
This is still a work in progress and will be included in a package of plans I am putting together hopefully by the end of the month.

Shed owners, I need your advice: Should I go with a 10x20 foot shed, or 12x16'? What are the best dimensions for a 200 sq ft shed? And where is the best door placement?

My city ordinances allow me to build up to a 200 sq ft shed up to 15 feet tall without going through the building permit process. So that's what I'm shooting for -- I want the maximum storage space I can get. Was thinking of a gambrel roof so I can run wall shelves as high up as I can get them.
I've never had a shed before, so don't know the best dimensions are as far as what works best for storing lawn equipment (mower, wheelbarrow, etc.), bikes and lots of storage tubs on shelves. Should I go with a 10x20' shed, a wider 12x16' shed or some other dimension?
And what do you recommend for door placement? One door on the end, or one in the middle of the longest side? What works best for maximizing wall shelf space and for being able to easily move large lawn equipment and bikes in and out of the shed?
