We're here today to announce the regulations and enforcement of Mardi Gras weekend and of course Mardi Gras Day, as well as enhanced enforcement beginning this weekend.

This has certainly improved since (early January)... but this week we are averaging 2 deaths a day. That's higher than we had been averaging for a very very long time. The virus is still taking a significant toll on our city.
We are very concerned about the new variants of the virus. The variants are known to be more contagious. We have 5 known cases of the new variants in Louisiana, and 20 (more) are being verified by the CDC.
Because most COVID-19 lab tests are not designed to capture specific variants, we have a big knowledge gap. We are concerned that this is the tip of the iceberg. This is all while we are trying to vaccinate our elders and our most vulnerable community members.
The virus, whether it's the one we've lived with for 10 months or it's the new variant, spreads exactly the same way. The highest spread is the smaller gatherings when people take their masks off, let their guards down, and are close to each other for long periods.
There is light at the end of the tunnel with the vaccines, but remember you have to be alive to get a vaccine.

What we saw last weekend on Bourbon Street was unacceptable. We know that those were our students in our city who were not doing the right thing. Unacceptable. Any unmasked gatherings have the potential of being a super spreader in our community.
This weekend you will see enhanced enforcement relative to the NOPD's presence on Bourbon Street and throughout the city of New Orleans. I think we were all hopeful that we could strike a necessary balance between having a safe Mardi Gras and a fun Mardi Gras.
But it's hard to do. To those who are upset about these restrictions, especially when it comes to the health of our people... I'd rather be accused of doing too much than doing too little. Bars will be closed citywide starting next weekend. No package liquor sales in the French Quarter. All sales of to-go drinks will be banned. Bourbon Street will be closed at night. There will be no loitering on Bourbon Street, no loitering on Frenchman Street. No loitering under the bridge. The Claiborne underpass will be fenced off. Large gatherings are banned and will not be tolerated, including those things that urge people to congregate, like street performances, etc.
All hands will be on deck. I do want to thank Gov. John Bel Edwards for ensuring that the increased capacity that the city will benefit from starting today as well as moving through Mardi Gras.
NOLA will get an additional 30 state police to help it out to enforce this
We are doing this in response to the health crisis that we are in. The consequences of not taking action... the cost of not taking action, is really too high. We have to mitigate the spread of this virus the best way we can.
This has to matter to all of us because this pandemic threatens all of us. At the end of the day, all of us must take the necessary action to do the right thing, to protect ourselves, to protect our families and to protect our workforce.
When we get to Ash Wednesday, we will be aggressively testing (for COVID-19). I also want to encourage those employees in our hospitality industry that will be impacted by the closing of bars to make your claims now with the LA Workforce Commission so you are covered.
Just write "COVID" and you will be covered for the five day period that bars will be closed in the city of New Orleans.

Everyone has a stake in this COVID-19 pandemic and getting us over this pandemic. We must work together with each other. I'm pleading with the community to abide by the guidelines that have been put in place. This year, Mardi Gras is very different.
We should not congregate or gather on St. Charles, Magazine, Bourbon, Frenchman, Claiborne corridor, etc. Beginning this week you will see an enhanced presence of NOPD. You will see an enhanced coverage involving our mounted divisions. OPSO will be on mounted patrol.
We will be out, we will be engaged, and we will be disbursing large crowds this weekend. For the second weekend, the entire NOPD will be all hands on deck. We will have a plan similar to which you saw in New Years Eve and Sugar Bowl coverage.
Bourbon will have limited access. Only residents, restaurant patrons, shop patrons and hotel guests will be allowed within those blocks. There will be no loitering allowed.
Claiborne Corridor will be fenced off from St. Louis to St. Bernard avenue. We will be out there in full effect to address anyone who wants to gather with large gatherings.

Large gatherings spread COVID. COVID can kill. So we are asking our residents as well as our visitors to help us make this year as safe as possible. If you see something, if you are aware of something, please say something by calling 311 and reporting large gatherings.
For us, this is normally a season of happiness, joy and just enjoying ourselves. But this year is very different. So for the good of everyone's health, I'm asking you to just stay at home and stay safe.

Covid-19 - new February lockdown rules - what you can and can't do
The Catalan government has announced updated rules and guidelines relating to the ongoing pandemic. TLDR: as of Monday 8 February, you can:
travel within your comarca (was municipality)
go to the gym (30%, and you have to book)
go to lunch or breakfast at a restaurant for 1 hour more
You are not allowed to leave or enter Catalonia without good reason (e.g. work, emergency, important administrative reasons, court summons, caring for dependents, etc). Comarcal (county, NOT municipal) lockdown from Monday 8 February - 22 February
This overrules the previous municipal lockdown. You are no longer limited to staying in one town/municipality.
For anyone living in Barcelona, this means that you can travel freely between BCN, l'Hospitalet, Badalona, Sant Adrià de Besòs and Santa Coloma de Gramanet.

We have a serious update to provide the WA community. This morning we received news of a positive COVID-19 test result. That positive result has come from a male hotel quarantine security guard, in his 20s. The information we have is fast-evolving. As you can understand, immediately our teams moved into place to begin contact tracing and put in place emergency response systems. This is all underway, and I ask everyone to be cooperative and understanding of what is going to take place. Here is what we know about the male who tested positive: He was working at one of the State’s hotel quarantine facilities – the Sheraton Four Points in the city. He had tested negative for COVID-19 on January Friday 15, January Sunday 17 and Saturday January 23 – as part of the weekly testing system in place. When the man was working at this hotel, there were four active cases of COVID-19. Of those four cases, we have at least three confirmed variant strains, two UK and one South African. We are told the guard was working on the same floor, as a positive UK variant case. The guard completed two 12-hours shifts on both the 26th and 27th of January. Exactly how the infection was acquired remains under investigation. The Health Department contact tracing team has pulled together a list of potential exposure sites of where this positive case has been in recent days. These locations currently include:

People who have been to these venues on these dates and times must get tested. In addition, people who live or work in the Falkirk Avenue, Maylands area including Coles, Liquorland and the Maylands shopping precinct should present for a test. They must then go home and isolate until their negative test results are returned. The investigation is on-going by our public health team, and it is likely more locations will be added following further discussions with the man. Close contacts will be contacted by public health officials and asked to quarantine for 14 days. More information on testing clinics will be available on our website – the WA Health and WA Gov websites. The man’s immediate household contacts have been contacted, tested and placed in isolation at State managed quarantine facilities to complete a 14-day quarantine period in a quarantine facility. All three have tested negative this morning. However, we can expect that they will become positive in coming days. Genome sequencing is underway on the positive case and results will be known by Tuesday morning. However, based on the information we have, it appears possible that this new positive case has the highly transmissible UK variant. The past year has been unlike any other – Western Australia has done an incredible job. It’s something I am so proud of. But as we have always known with COVID – it can change very quickly. Today – we need to go back to what we know best, to ensure we limit community transmission of COVID-19 in our State. Even though it was nearly 10 months ago – WA has experienced community transmission of this virus before. We all did the right thing and we crushed it. And it worked. So beginning at 6pm tonight, the whole Perth metropolitan area, the Peel region and the South West region will be going into a full lockdown. This lockdown will run until 6pm on Friday. A five-day lockdown. It’s crucial we act quickly, to keep the community safe. We cannot forget how quickly this virus can spread, nor the devastation it can cause. Following our discussions with the Chief Health Officer and Police Commissioner, the following measures will be put in place from 6pm for people in Perth, Peel and the South West: People in these regions are required to stay home, except for the following four reasons:
Shopping for essentials like groceries, medicine and necessary supplies.
Medical or health care needs including compassionate requirements and looking after the vulnerable.
Exercise, within their neighbourhood, but only with one other person and only for one hour per day.
Work, where you cannot work from home or remotely.
In addition to this Stay Home rule. If you do leave home, for one of the four reasons you will be required to wear a mask at all times outside and if you need to work indoors, then wearing a mask in the workplace is also mandatory. To be clear, mask wearing on public transport is also mandatory. People in the Perth, Peel or South West region need to stay inside their region for the next five days, unless for an essential reason. We are strongly encouraging that everyone in this area, who is from another WA region, stay here and do not travel further outside of this area until the lockdown is over. If you do need to travel outside the region you are in now, that can only occur if you need to return to your place of residence or exceptional circumstances. The transport of essential goods into this region, is permitted, under our existing transport guidelines. This lockdown means the following businesses, venues and locations in the relevant regions need to close for the next five days:
Pubs, bars and clubs
Gyms and indoor sporting venues
Playgrounds, skate parks and outdoor recreational facilities
Cinemas, entertainment venues, and casinos
Large religious gatherings and places of worship
Libraries and cultural institutions
Restaurants and cafes will close, and provide takeaway service only. 10 people can attend funerals, weddings are cancelled for the next five days. No visitors are permitted to your home, unless caring for someone vulnerable or an emergency. No visitors will be allowed in aged care homes, unless exceptional circumstances. No visitors to hospitals and/or disability facilities, unless exceptional circumstances. Elective surgery and procedures for categories 2 and 3 will be suspended from Tuesday, 2 February. Category 1 and urgent category 2 surgery will continue. For a majority of schools in these regions, school was due to start tomorrow. That has now been put on hold and schools will be closed until next week – following the lockdown measures. It is, in effect, an extension of the school holidays. I have been in contact with the Prime Minister and my fellow State and Territory colleagues to advise them of this situation. I have recommended that they put a stop to any travel into WA – as an extra precautionary measure. Border controls are important here – and I 100% support them to ensure we can get through this. All these measures will be reviewed regularly and the Chief Health Officer will continue to monitor the serious situation and provide more ongoing advice. This is an extremely fast-moving situation. I know for many Western Australians this is going to come as a shock. Western Australians have done so well for so long but this week it is absolutely crucial that we stay home, maintain physical distancing and personal hygiene and get tested if you have symptoms. This is a very serious situation and each and every one of us has to do everything we personally can to help stop the spread in the community. We have acted decisively and swiftly given these circumstances. I want to thank everyone in advance for their patience. In effect, for a short period of time, we are going back to what we experienced in March and April. This is a highly unpredictable virus. But it is important to act calmly and take sensible precautions. Leaving your home to purchase food and essentials will be permitted during the lockdown. I say this, so people understand that you do not need to rush to the supermarket today. --- IMPORTANT UPDATE REGARDING COVID-19 IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA, AND PERTH, PEEL AND SOUTH-WEST FIVE-DAY LOCKDOWN --- This morning, I convened an urgent meeting of the Emergency Management Team. We have a serious update to provide the WA community. This morning we received news of a positive COVID-19 test result. That positive result has come from a male hotel quarantine security guard, in his 20s. The information we have is fast-evolving. As you can understand, immediately our teams moved into place to begin contact tracing and put in place emergency response systems. This is all underway, and I ask everyone to be cooperative and understanding of what is going to take place. Here is what we know about the male who tested positive: He was working at one of the State’s hotel quarantine facilities – the Sheraton Four Points in the city. He had tested negative for COVID-19 on January Friday 15, January Sunday 17 and Saturday January 23 – as part of the weekly testing system in place. When the man was working at this hotel, there were four active cases of COVID-19. Of those four cases, we have at least three confirmed variant strains, two UK and one South African. We are told the guard was working on the same floor, as a positive UK variant case. The guard completed two 12-hours shifts on both the 26th and 27th of January. Exactly how the infection was acquired remains under investigation. The Health Department contact tracing team has pulled together a list of potential exposure sites of where this positive case has been in recent days. These locations currently include: -Coles Maylands supermarket on 25 January from 8pm to 10pm -KFC Maylands on 27 January from 6pm to midnight -Mitsubishi Motors car dealership in Midland on 27 January from 7pm to close -Spudshed, Coventry Village in Morley on 27 January from 8pm to midnight -ECU Joondalup on 28 January from 11am to 2pm -Consulate General of India on St Georges Terrace in Perth on 28 January from 12pm to 5pm -Halal Grocery Store in Cloverdale on 28 January from 7pm to 9pm -Venus Ladies and Gentleman Hair Design Maylands hairdressers on 29 January from 1pm to 3pm -Perth Convention Centre on 29 January from 4pm to 6pm -Nedlands Family Practice GP surgery on 29 January from 5pm to 6pm -Chemist Warehouse North Perth Pharmacy on 29 January from 5.30pm to 7.30pm -7-Eleven Ascot petrol station on 29 January from 8pm to 9pm -Coles Maylands supermarket on 29 January from 8pm 9pm -Puma Service Station in Burswood on 30 January from 11am to 12 midday. -Coles Express/Shell Service Station in Cloverdale on 30 January from 12 midday to 3pm -Pharmacy 777 at Maylands Park Shopping Centre 30 January from 2.30pm to 4pm. People who have been to these venues on these dates and times must get tested. In addition, people who live or work in the Falkirk Avenue, Maylands area including Coles, Liquorland and the Maylands shopping precinct should present for a test. They must then go home and isolate until their negative test results are returned. The investigation is on-going by our public health team, and it is likely more locations will be added following further discussions with the man. Close contacts will be contacted by public health officials and asked to quarantine for 14 days. More information on testing clinics will be available on our website – the WA Health and WA Gov websites. The man’s immediate household contacts have been contacted, tested and placed in isolation at State managed quarantine facilities to complete a 14-day quarantine period in a quarantine facility. All three have tested negative this morning. However, we can expect that they will become positive in coming days. Genome sequencing is underway on the positive case and results will be known by Tuesday morning. However, based on the information we have, it appears possible that this new positive case has the highly transmissible UK variant. The past year has been unlike any other – Western Australia has done an incredible job. It’s something I am so proud of. But as we have always known with COVID – it can change very quickly. Today – we need to go back to what we know best, to ensure we limit community transmission of COVID-19 in our State. Even though it was nearly 10 months ago – WA has experienced community transmission of this virus before. We all did the right thing and we crushed it. And it worked. So beginning at 6pm tonight, the whole Perth metropolitan area, the Peel region and the South West region will be going into a full lockdown. This lockdown will run until 6pm on Friday. A five-day lockdown. It’s crucial we act quickly, to keep the community safe. We cannot forget how quickly this virus can spread, nor the devastation it can cause. Following our discussions with the Chief Health Officer and Police Commissioner, the following measures will be put in place from 6pm for people in Perth, Peel and the South West: People in these regions are required to stay home, except for the following four reasons: - Shopping for essentials like groceries, medicine and necessary supplies. - Medical or health care needs including compassionate requirements and looking after the vulnerable. - Exercise, within their neighbourhood, but only with one other person and only for one hour per day. - Work, where you cannot work from home or remotely. In addition to this Stay Home rule. If you do leave home, for one of the four reasons you will be required to wear a mask at all times outside and if you need to work indoors, then wearing a mask in the workplace is also mandatory. To be clear, mask wearing on public transport is also mandatory. People in the Perth, Peel or South West region need to stay inside their region for the next five days, unless for an essential reason. We are strongly encouraging that everyone in this area, who is from another WA region, stay here and do not travel further outside of this area until the lockdown is over. If you do need to travel outside the region you are in now, that can only occur if you need to return to your place of residence or exceptional circumstances. The transport of essential goods into this region, is permitted, under our existing transport guidelines. This lockdown means the following businesses, venues and locations in the relevant regions need to close for the next five days: - Pubs, bars and clubs - Gyms and indoor sporting venues - Playgrounds, skate parks and outdoor recreational facilities - Cinemas, entertainment venues, and casinos - Large religious gatherings and places of worship - Libraries and cultural institutions Restaurants and cafes will close, and provide takeaway service only. 10 people can attend funerals, weddings are cancelled for the next five days. No visitors are permitted to your home, unless caring for someone vulnerable or an emergency. No visitors will be allowed in aged care homes, unless exceptional circumstances. No visitors to hospitals and/or disability facilities, unless exceptional circumstances. Elective surgery and procedures for categories 2 and 3 will be suspended from Tuesday, 2 February. Category 1 and urgent category 2 surgery will continue. For a majority of schools in these regions, school was due to start tomorrow. That has now been put on hold and schools will be closed until next week – following the lockdown measures. It is, in effect, an extension of the school holidays. I have been in contact with the Prime Minister and my fellow State and Territory colleagues to advise them of this situation. I have recommended that they put a stop to any travel into WA – as an extra precautionary measure. Border controls are important here – and I 100% support them to ensure we can get through this. All these measures will be reviewed regularly and the Chief Health Officer will continue to monitor the serious situation and provide more ongoing advice. This is an extremely fast-moving situation. I know for many Western Australians this is going to come as a shock. Western Australians have done so well for so long but this week it is absolutely crucial that we stay home, maintain physical distancing and personal hygiene and get tested if you have symptoms. This is a very serious situation and each and every one of us has to do everything we personally can to help stop the spread in the community. We have acted decisively and swiftly given these circumstances. I want to thank everyone in advance for their patience. As you know, the numbers have shot up since the Christmas holiday season to the point where over 3,000 Riverside County residents are getting infected every day, and scores are dying. Even Covid-free residents are experiencing serious negative impacts, as overwhelmed hospitals cancel elective surgeries and lose resources to handle non-Covid related medical emergencies. Although help is on the horizon, in the form of the Covid vaccines, the inoculation programs are rolling out more slowly than planned, and most epidemiologists are predicting that the worst is still in front of us. Medical experts agree that a major source of the spread of the virus is large indoor social gatherings, particularly when participants ignore social distancing protocols and the wearing of masks. Unfortunately, just such a gathering occurred in the Agua Caliente Ballroom on December 16, 2020, when over 100 members of the East Valley Republican Women Federated (hereafter, EVRWF) held their monthly luncheon. The group photo of the event clearly shows the women crowded together, virtually none wearing a mask. So egregious were the group’s violations of the Tribe’s own safety guidelines for indoor events that the President of the EVRWF issued a public apology. Unfortunately, Covid-19 is no respecter of after-the-fact apologies. The next EVRWF luncheon is scheduled for the Agua Caliente Ballroom on February 1st, 2021, when the pandemic will still be raging. Since the EVRWF is strongly opposed to social protocols and government measures designed to contain the pandemic, it is more than reasonable to assume that the Tribe’s guidelines will be ignored again at the next luncheon. Our concerns over the danger posed by this event, both to the health of the public and your own employees, are exacerbated by the fact that the featured speaker is Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco. Sheriff Bianco is a very high-profile opponent of government-imposed measures to contain and curb coronavirus transmission. Thus, all the ingredients are there for the February luncheon to become a superspreader event. The EVRWF has already received considerable negative publicity, both on social media and in the press, in conjunction with their December luncheon. This publicity has spilled over to the Tribe, as well. The clear solution to our health concerns, and to avoid more negative publicity for Agua Caliente and the Tribe, is to simply cancel the event. We therefore entreat you to bring this matter to the Tribal Council, and ask them to approve the cancellation of the luncheon. The stakes could not be higher.

Covid-19 - new January lockdown rules - what you can and can't do
The Catalan government has announced updated rules and guidelines for January-February.
As of Thursday 7 January:
You are not allowed to leave or enter Catalonia without good reason (e.g. work, emergency, important administrative reasons, court summons, caring for dependents, etc). Municipal lockdown Thursday 7 January - Sunday 7 February (inclusive)
You may not leave your municipality (town/city) during this time, except for good reason (e.g. work, school, looking after dependents, medical emergency, etc).
This overrules the previous comarca lockdown (you cannot now freely travel within your comarca), you cannot travel to a second residence, holiday booking, etc.
For anyone living in Barcelona, this means that you cannot leave the city of Barcelona apart from those exceptions.
I've hated where I live (Las Vegas, NV) for years but my plans to move keep getting thwarted.
I'm the son of a union construction worker who has taken me from my birthplace of Chicago at the age of 10 and moved me and my family across the country to New Mexico, Nevada, and Indiana. I arrived in Las Vegas for my seventh grade of school, and my life has never been the same since. Before anyone says that the "grass is not greener on the other side", I want to acknowledge the fact that I have not had only bad times. It's just the frequency of bad events and people who have gone out of their way to do harm to me or my progress is sincerely over the top. If you have ever been to Vegas outside of the strip, you'll probably think it's beautiful and new compared to some other parts of the country, and that part may be true. It is a newly developing city that is starting to mirror the likes of other rising metropolitan areas. Yet, I cannot accurately express my level of disgust for the quality of people that exist here, from school, to jobs, to churches, I have experienced nothing but the same variety of transient loser who has come out here to Vegas from somewhere else seeking some element of the fast life. I have tried getting out, most recently have been here since 2014, and in the last six years, every two years; I have developed a new plan to get out of this place. And all three have failed, just a month ago I had a glimmer of hope to get to Colorado and continue my career there. I went through three interviews just to be turned down at the last minute after I already set my plans in motion. Not to mention with covid-19 having changed everybody's worlds, it has not allowed me anymore respite from the atrocities that I witness here in Vegas on a regular basis. The last few months, there have been more stabbings, shootings, and robberies by the strip and outside of the strip. I recently just moved out of an apartment complex far off-strip where a man had thrown his infant child off of the second floor balcony and set his apartment on fire, killing his dog. The infant didn't make it. I woke up at 4am to the ungodly, horrific wailing of the mother who was trying to resuscitate her child on the cold sidewalk. For almost two months I had to look upon the apartment unit kiddy corner from mine and be reminded of what happened just a couple hundred feet away. When things were good here, I had two large groups of friends who have since either moved away, or betrayed my trust in some way to where I have not had any friends to regularly visit but two. Even during the so-called "good times", I had put my best foot forward working in construction, sales, logistics, you name it And jobwise it is just as depraved as any other aspect of living in this city. Absolutely everybody has gotten their job through nepotism, and they all actively seek whoever they can screw out of a job for any dumb reason. I know this is not exclusive to Las vegas, but at this point I am utterly convinced that Las Vegas is the America of america, in that they sell the wildest dreams of luck and chance to those who see this bright City from afar off and in reality opens its wide Jaws to swallow in these transient visitors, such as myself. And it will not let go until it feels it has gotten everything it wants out of you. I can't help but to feel that I have lost so much since being here, and the only thing that gives me peace is the fact that I have maintained my faith in my respective God and I have tried my best not to fall in to the same pitfalls that people around here fall into. There is no good industry besides the hospitality and tourism industry, and everybody knows how that has been going since this virus pandemic. Even before the pandemic, casinos and tourism related industries were the only thing going for this place, it has nothing else solid or respectable to speak of. This year, since the raiders stadium especially, more people have been coming here from California and Texas and elsewhere trying to live cheaply, in every sense of the word. Our roads are completely unsafe, our government does not care unless California's does, and most of the outrageous newsworthy events that happened in the city are clearly muffled and not allowed to surface so that the city can continue collecting more people and sucking them dry. I have lived in four states in my life, I'm only 25, and yet I can see that this is the worst place I have ever lived, and if I can do anything to get myself out of here with my girlfriend that I love, I would do it. Sometimes, I feel like I am trapped in purgatory I'm around a bunch of people who not only don't care about themselves, but seem to hate others in any given setting or scenario whether professional or casual. I and my family have become afraid to leave the house, we only shop for groceries in the very early morning because we don't trust that anybody in this city would have the willpower or intelligence or wherewithal to avoid crowds as these covid-19 guidelines have been suggesting. Excuse this monumentally long post, but I have been stuck here for a total of six years most recently, and I'm beginning to feel like I don't exist because of this cycle of repetition I have found myself in in this city because no matter what I do, no matter what job I get, no matter how hard I work, no matter who I spend my time around with, it all turns to dust. My best advice to anyone ever, do not move here. Visit, and leave but do not live, not if you value the deeper things of life, for there is nothing but shallow Waters here that have been made to look very deep. Please, fellow Redditors, don't ever find yourself in a place like this, and if you relate to what I'm saying, I hope we are all going to make it out of this together. Tl;Dr: Las Vegas is a cesspool and I have been spinning my wheels trying to escape its clutches, do not move here and do not fall for their lies about how great this city is. They won't mention the level of violence and crime, the shoddy school systems, and the overall culture that exists in this city that values everything fake and tinsel over what's real and substantial.

Hello all, Posting on behalf of my wife, who may comment below or respond to people, and hopefully add some clarity to what I am posting. Trying to get some good ideas and an outside view of her relationship with her parents. Let me start by saying that my wife and I have adopted a mixed race daughter a couple years ago(important to the context here). My wife has done a ton of research on raising black children for white parents, hair care, identity, you name it. She grew up in a smaller town where there were not many black people. She tries to help educate her parents on some of the things they say that are not appropriate or things that other people are saying around our daughter(yes we've heard the N-word stated around her while at their cabin by other friends of theirs). These conversations never go anywhere and they deny being racist or ever making racist comments. Moving on... Fathers day weekend a bit over a year ago her brother and sister in law were at the cabin and decided to go off on us about how our daughter gets more attention than them. We left and cut them off. We've seen them at 1 or 2 events since then. Fast forward to Thanksgiving last year and everything comes to a head with them after a text message they sent while I was in the hospital. My wife tried to reconcile with them and I was told to F-off. We went no contact again. Her parents have told her multiple times that she needs to let it go with her brother because she is the more mature one. He has not apologized for what they did to us. They keep saying they are going to but we have yet to year from them. Last night her parents called to ask what the plan was for Christmas and her birthday(I'm high risk and we've been isolating). At the beginning of the conversation her mother mentioned that her brother got us gifts to which she said, great I got a present after not having spoken to him in over a year. At this point her mother went off telling her how she needs to get over it. Told her that she has issues multiple times, etc. The conversation got into politics and posts that her and myself have posted on Facebook. They are mad because we move due to my health and are 15-20 minutes further from them. They pretty much stopped visiting us last summer anyway. We moved closer to my parents as they try to help out with my medical stuff when it's needed. She was also told that she has issues earlier this year when she told her parents that if they are going to go to the casino and live life as though nothing is wrong that they will not be able to visit us. Her father then accused her of keeping their granddaughter from them if they are following state guidelines(there were none). I'm high risk, my wife would also be considered high risk, and we don't want our daughter getting Covid either even though she's healthy. My wife has been trying to make attempts to keep them involved. She and our daughter made cookies for them and we delivered them recently. Even for the short time we were there, her dad couldn't be bothered to wear a mask. I watch my wife try to put as much effort as possible into keeping her family involved in anything we do and it goes unappreciated. There is a lot more that I could type up for her but I'll leave it here for now and if she wants to add some she can. I guess I typed that all up so that we could ask for suggestions on how to handle this and based off this information, would you consider them narcissists. I've sent my wife this subreddit and a lot of it is hitting home with her. It's clearly stressing us both out, but I'm watching it tear apart my wife. Statements by Premier Kenney Opening Statements
Here to lay out additional health measures which are necessary to protect healthcare system and save lives
Alberta has faced most of the year with lower levels of spread, hospitalizations, and fatalities
Having said that, last few weeks are different
Incredible work is being done by healthcare workers in face of this
Delays in surgeries have occurred, which for some may result in a shorter lifespan
Not doing anything now will result in continued growth of hospitalizations and further strain on healthcare
On advice of chief medical officer, restrictions have occurred. Government realizes that this can impact businesses and cause adversities
Knows many feed policies are unjust and why provincial government has stressed education first instead of using policy
On the other hand, while space can be made, it will have further health impacts (e.g. running out of capacity in hospitals)
If stronger action isn't taken now, hundreds or thousands more Albertans will die
Data appears to suggest a stabilization (around a reproductive factor of around 1.2), but that isn't enough
New Restrictions
As of today, all outdoor and indoor social gatherings are banned
The mask mandate will expand to all indoor places, with exception of rental homes and farm operations
As of December 13th, 12:01 AM:
(1) Retail, grocery stores, and shopping malls are restricted to 15% of capacity, down from 25%. Kiosks are open for takeaway service only. Malls cannot be used for socialization and shopping only
(2) Places are worship to 15% occupancy with previous restrictions applying. Online and drive-in services are still recommended
(3) Restaurants, pubs, bars, lounges and cafes are restricted to takeout and delivery services only. This will open up their access to provincial and federal supports
(4c) Indoor entertainment (e.g. libraries, science centres, water parks)
(4d) Trade centres
The restrictions do not apply to service visits, healthcare, or childcare .
(5) All Alberta employees must work from home unless employer requires physical presence for operational reasons (up from a recommendation)
No changes to schools beyond what was previously announced
These are all province wide and will be in effect for 4 weeks
Goal has been to be targeted. However, the whole province is seeing significant spread
Christmas
Knows the holidays are important for many people
The hard truth is that the single source of spread is at-home gatherings
If we let people gather for Christmas, we'll see a spike in cases
We can't let that happen, so please follow the gathering restrictions previously noted (only in-household or with 2 close contacts if you live alone)
Increased Enterprise Support
This isn't the fault of anybody who followed the guidelines
Until the contact tracing system was overwhelmed, we didn't see it being the fault of business owners
But we are seeing spread so widespread, it doesn't matter how careful you were
These are decisions are a last resort
Knows this impact will be real. So financial support for small and medium size enterprise
4x growth in small and medium enterprise relaunch grant, while lowering eligibility from 40% of revenue lost to 30%. This will also be retroactive to March

Why now, instead of two weeks ago?: Goal is to reduce contacts, assuming Albertans respond. This should be a very strong message and reduce transmissions. Measures have been increasingly harsh because each restriction creates harms, will hurt people who have sunk all their money in a business, and potentially increase self-harm. So this is a last resort
Why keep retail open instead of just curbside?: Encourages curbside, but some people may not be able to live without basic goods. Even most stringent policies around the world have kept retail open in some capacity. Feels the designation of essential and non-essential businesses in spring was a mistake
Why is cabinet being transparent about the reproductive value (R or Rt)?: Are preparing ways to publicly present this data, as well as healthcare capacity. Targeting next week
Do you think the softer measures before will cost lives/make economic recovery more difficult?: Shutting down early would have had significant impacts. Thinks it'd be a huge mistake to draw correlations between strictness of restrictions and outcomes and that there is a reasonable balance being stuck
Since you defined Covid representing "a tiny percent" of deaths, 300 deaths have occurred. There have been significant growths in hospitalization and cases. Do you take personal responsibility?: Rejects the premise of the question and calls it more of an "NDP speech". Feels the province has done more than other jurisdictions, especially early on. Also notes that BC, who has a government of opposite end of the political spectrum, has had a similar approach

How does outdoor gathering ban even work?: Goal is to restrict social gatherings. So do not socially gather indoors or outdoors. If they gather in a park or on the sidewalk, that isn't allowed. Difficulty will certainly lie in enforcement and hopes it won't need to be used. It will be up to law enforcement to determine if they feel they need to use it

The Royal Alexandra Hospital has decided to place facility on "Watch" status as a precautionary measure
Hospitals are safe places to receive care, but be aware that staff are under extreme stress
Edmonton Zone will enact additional measures:
(1) Postponing up to 60% of non-urgent surgeries (up from 30%)
(2) Diagnostic imaging may be reduced by up to 40%
(3) Ambulatory visits and procedures may be reduced as needed
AHS will contact those who are impacted
This is why these measures are needed and a sign of how Covid may impact more than the ill

A follow up question noted an example of family members in Alberta were quarantining were 2 weeks before Christmas. Challenge is that enforcement of a "quarantine" will be difficult to control. Province is saying "gathering for Christmas" won't be allowed with people who don't live in the home. Knows it's a big imposition but any suggestions like in the question may cause a Thanksgiving-like increase in spread
