Woodbine’s Dairy King is closing.

From Dairy King’s facebook:

”There comes a time in a man’s life when he must make exceedingly difficult decisions:

Due to circumstances beyond our control, effective August 3, the Dairy King will cease operations until further notice. Under the current conditions, we simply cannot make ends meet. We lost all catering jobs the second week of March. We cater to churches, schools, and offices so no explanation is necessary. That is 25% of our sales. We are maintaining 70% to 75% of our normal restaurant sales which translates to a 50% loss of income. We cannot pay 100% of our expenses with 50% of our income. The funding we received in April from the SBA has also been exhausted.

Words cannot express how much Carolyn and I appreciate the continued prayers and support from our community, you have been so gracious and generous. We could not have made it this far without your donations and patronage.

For the record:
Next month, I will be 63 years old. I have been working 60, 70 and 80 hours per week for 32 years straight. I am exhausted physically, mentally and emotionally. ALL our energy is poured into the business. We have very little time off and we rarely take vacations. I just cannot keep doing this at my age. Not to mention, we are still in massive debt due to the relocation after the flood. With all this being said, Carolyn and I made the decision to put the property and/or the Dairy King brand up for sale at the beginning of the year. We have been thinking about this for years and obviously, it is a difficult decision. The property was listed in February and after only four days, a potential buyer submitted a “Letter of Intent”. A few weeks later, the virus hit and everything was cancelled.

I really cannot imagine my life without the Dairy King in it. After 50 years, it becomes part of your DNA. Our family has had an amazing run. I am so proud of the legacy my parents left. The wonderful product and the reputation of community service preceded me. It was an honor for me to buy the business in 2000 and try to continue to meet the standards my folks had established. Dairy King has the greatest fans on the planet and that was on display the past four months. We sold 400 t-shirts, that is amazing. Hopefully, there is someone interested in buying the Dairy King brand and would like to keep this icon of Woodbine going. Carolyn and I would stay on and train and try make it a smooth transition. Until that time, going forward, we are in a position to keep the catering business going if and when this pandemic is over and churches, schools and offices can operate at full capacity.

Again, on behalf of entire Jones family, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for 5 decades of support, it is very humbling. My mom and dad were rock stars. It has been my pleasure to walk in that huge shadow, not only in business, but also in my daily walk as a believer. We have been truly blessed.

God bless,
Jeff and Carolyn”

NSW reports 6 new local cases and 3 new overseas cases - 17 January 2021

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟰 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀

  • 3 are returned overseas travellers in hotel quarantine.
  • 6 new locally acquired cases
    • All close contacts linked to the Western Sydney case reported yesterday; investigations into the source are continuing. Genome sequencing results will be available later today.
    • 5 are household contacts; spouse and children.
    • 1 is a "very close contact of them in very close proximity"
⚠️ NOTE:
A staff member at Concord Repatriation General Hospital is one of today’s new cases. They are now in isolation but worked three shifts at the hospital in the cardiology and radiology wards while potentially infectious on the 12th, 13th and 14th of January. The person’s role involves minimal contact with patients. They wore a face mask during each shift.
Seven other staff have been identified as close contacts of this case. They are self-isolating and have all have tested negative for COVID-19 to date. Staff who have been identified as casual contacts are being notified by the public health unit and are undergoing testing. There is no ongoing risk to staff or patients.

Active cases updated at 2:50pm; 17/01
Cluster Last 24 hours TOTAL Reported Notes
Avalon cluster 0 151 Jan: 10, 08, 06, 03; Dec: 31, 30, 29, 28, 27, 26, 25, 24, 23, 22, 21, 20, 19, 18, 17. Genome sequencing suggests that the strain is similar to that circulating in the US; the source of the outbreak remains under investigation.
Berala cluster 0 28 Jan: 13, 12, 11, 10, 09, 08, 06, 05, 03, 02, 01. Genome sequencing has revealed that this cluster is linked to one of the patient transport workers.
Croydon cluster 0 11 Jan: 08, 05; Dec: 31, 30 Genome sequencing results suggest links to the Avalon cluster, but epidemiological links are still under investigation.
Transport worker cluster 0 4 Jan: 02; Dec: 31, 17, 3 No new cases within the last 14 days. The first case was found to be infected by returned travellers being transported from Sydney airport to HQ.

🎦 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆'𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 @ 𝟭𝟭𝗮𝗺:

Dr Chant:
Concern re the decline in testing + specific suburbs where testing should increase
It is critical that we get those testing rates up very high so that we can detect these unrecognised chains of transmission. And the areas I'm particularly calling out for testing are in Bankstown, Lidcombe, Auburn, Berala and Wentworthville. So my plea applies to everyone across the state but particularly in those local government areas as we're trying to mop up any last chains of transmission.
Source of today's cases (plus 1 reported yesterday)
The investigations into the source are continuing. So we don't know the exact link to the source, we are waiting for genome sequencing which will be available later today. That will give us some insights into ... what genomic linkage, whether it's Berala or Avalon or keeping our options open, but they would be obviously what we would be considering.
Concord Repatriation General Hospital
One of [today's cases] is a worker at Concord Repatriation General Hospital and they're now in isolation. But, [they] did work some shifts whilst [infectious] in the cardiology and radiology wards ... on 12, 13 and 14 January. The person's role involves minimal patient contact and they also wore a face mask during each of their shifts. So it is pleasing to say that the seven close contacts, their workplace contacts, have already been test and tested negative. Obviously they will then be placed in 14 days' quarantine and we will ensure that they're tested repeatedly and we'll update you on any further cases. There's also a number of staff that have been identified as casual contacts and they're being followed up by the Public Health Unit. As I said, investigations are ongoing, but there is no ongoing risk to patients or staff. Close contacts have been identified and are isolating. Public testing is being undertaken and the environments in which the person worked have been effectively cleaned. So just want to reassure people that, please continue to access care from Concord. There is no ongoing risk to patients or staff there.
Venues/Public Transport of concern mentioned at the presser

⚠️ NEWS: Public Health (COVID-19 Western Australia) Order 2021
Following the reported case of COVID-19 in a Perth HQ security guard, the NSW Government has put in place a new Public Health Order to ensure anyone entering NSW from affected areas of Western Australia follows ‘stay at home’ rules.
Anyone entering NSW must complete an interstate traveller declaration confirming whether they attended any of the venues of concern identified by WA Health. Any who have attended those venues must get tested and isolate for 14 days.
Arrivals who have been in any of the named local government areas in the Perth, Peel and South West regions since Monday 25 January must get a COVID-19 test within 48 hours of arriving, and stay at home for five days, until 9pm on Friday 5 February. If they do not get tested, they are required to remain at home for a total of 14 days.
Anyone who has been in WA should be particularly careful to monitor for symptoms and get tested immediately should they occur.
People subject to the stay at home orders in Perth should not be travelling to NSW.

How is living in the Cachet neighbourhood

Hi everyone!
First time posting on this sub. I grew up in Markham close to Birchmount and Steeles but moved away after undergrad to Toronto. Now that my partner and I have a young baby, we're looking to move back into Markham to be closer with family. The real estate market is CRAZY right now. There's been many posts about bidding wars and so on, but aside from the ridiculous prices, what do you all think about the Cachet neighbourhood? Specifically on 16th and west of Woodbine behind that King Square building that's always empty?
Is this a good area for kids to grow up in? The elementary school in the area is Lincoln Alexander. How is the crime rate in that area? How are the people? Because of lockdown, even if I drive around I don't see anyone walking/hanging about.
Any advice is appreciated!!
Edit: Some of you mentioned that's not Cachet...any idea what that area is? It's a little strip of residential houses that are between highway 404 and woodbine, with the north and south parameters being 16th ave and major mac.

Nashville Restaurants

Nashville staples
Unique and/or Notable
  • Pfunky Griddle in Berry Hill – Cook your own pancakes (tables are griddles)
  • House of Cards – Magic themed restaurant. Also higher end, but show included (not as high end as Catbird)
  • Chauhan and Tansuo (upper Gulch) – Tansua does a Peking duck for 4 with 48 hours notice and has cooking classes (Maneet Chauhan teaches the classes, unless something has changed)
  • Mangia (not sure where now, but I have heard he moved over to Franklin road (check)) – A multi-hour, multi-course dinner and a “show” (the chef does interactive singing) – this is a lot of fun to take a group out to
  • Mafiaozos on 12 South – Get the Godfather booth for a group (6 if I remember) – Food is good, not out of this world, but the booth in the wall is an experience
  • Monells – Family style service (will seat with others when non-COVID) Germantown location best for food
  • Biscuit Love (Gulch or East Nashville) – Day only; kitschy breakfast
  • Cory’s Dog House near Centennial Park – Hot dog joint, nuff said?
  • Blue Moon Grill in the Rock Harbor Marina – Food is so so, but it is set up in the Marina (west side of town end of Robertson road left on Basswood)
  • Shipwreck Cove at the Nashville Boat Club (Percy Priest) also in a Marina
Higher end foodie
  • Rolf and Daughters in Germantown – Love sitting on the patio here and eating when the nights are more temperate
  • Etch in So Bro – I love the creations this chef run restaurant puts out; They have a happy hour, as well, to try a few of their items
  • Catbird Seat on Music Row (above Patterson House) – Feels like Iron Chef as the chefs cook in the middle of the seating area
  • Bastion in Chestnut Hill – Another place to try a tasting menu
  • Josephine on 12 South – High end menu (some items very unique) or tasting menu; a bit pricier than the 2 above
  • Husk in Rutledge Hill (near So Bro) – Southern Fine dining in a historic building
  • Folk in East Nashville - Great Italian in a nice spot (one of our best)
Burgers
  • Pharmacy in East Nashville – Some interesting choices and a bier garten out back
  • Gabby’s in Wedgewood – Ask about the “secret” menu; a bit pricier, but very good (he also treats his employees excellent)
  • Brown’s Diner on 21st – Greasy spoon/diner style
  • Rotiers on Elliston – Has been around forever
  • Burger Up (multiple locations) and Burger Republic – I think they are fine, but have friends in love with them
  • M.L. Rose – not my personal fave (good, just not awesome), but good beer selection, as well, so often where I end up with friends. All locations are nice to sit down with friends.
Steak As with most cities, we have the standard steakhouses, like Ruth's Chris,Del Frisco's, Flemings, and Morton's. I used to enjoy the Peddler on 2nd (CLOSED), but largely for their gimmicky way they would cut the steak at your table (charged by the ounce). There is still one in Gatlinburg, I think.
  • Kanye Prime in the Gulch - One of my favorite in the area.
  • Bourbon Steak in the Marriott downtown - Steak is great, but the real reason to go is to view the city at night from the top of the Marriott.
  • Sperry's in Belle Meade - This one is closer to where I live and my wife enjoys it.
  • Others that have been recommended (have not tried): Jack Ruby's, Oak Steakhouse, and the Standard.
Deli
  • 51st Street Deli in the Nations (51st and Centennial) – Also good tacos (skip the fries, as they sit too long)
  • The Southern Engine Deli [North Gulch] – I think this is owned by the people that own the Southern restaurant
BBQ
  • Martin’s (various – my fave is down in Nolensville, the town)
  • Edley’s (various – all locations a bit loud due to décor)
  • Honeyfire in Bellevue – Rather plain in approach, counter service (order and they deliver). Owner Shane also big on bourbon, so one of the better bourbon selections in a very casual spot.
  • Jack's BBQ on Broad (downtown) - I have not been in years, but the comments suggest I should put this in. In general, I try to avoid downtown, esp. during the tourist season.
Cajun
  • Bros on Charlotte – was the most bayou down and dirty place in the area. CLOSED Bro retired recently
  • Papa Boudreux’s on Highway 7 (between the Trace and Columbia) – A long hike out there, but if you are going down the trace, exit on 7 and try this hole in the wall. Cash only, unless something has changed. It is in BFE, so plan ahead.
  • The Lost Cajun (Hendersonville and Mt. Juliet) – This one is a chain, but it is cajun without driving really far
  • All the rest are casual dining, like Voodoo Gumbo in Bellevue (too tame for my tastes), and J Gumbos (chain out of Louisville, arcade only now)
Irish
  • McNamaras in Donelson – Old Irish staple
  • The Lost Paddy on Spence Lane – One I recently found that has great Irish food (owner is Irish and likely in the place when you go)
Italian
  • Mama Mia’s – Experience more than the food. You can bring your own bottle (cork fee), but no wine or alcohol on premise. The experience is you will see the old Italians there that look like mafia
  • Coco’s in the Nations – Very casual in a “grocery store”
  • Café Nonna in Sylvan Heights – Very simple, but great food
Pizza
  • DeSanos (midtown only, Bellevue location kind of meh) – Fire oven pizza
  • Sky King (Kingston springs) – Even better fire oven. During the winter, sit at the bar and watch your pizza being made
  • Joey’s – Greasy NY style, but Joey was known as the pizza nazi (see a trend?) NOTE: Manny’s (Mall downtown) is Joey’s brothers. Manny’s daughter Dana owns a place down in Spring Hill (There is also Sal's which I had heard was a brother, so correcting here). Sal's, near Percy Priest, is also good pizza.
  • Five Points in East Nashville and on Charlotte – More modern NY style; great crust
  • Nicky’s Coal Fire in the Nations – Unique oven style pizza (next to Southern Grist brewery)
  • Pizza Perfect (Vandy and Bellevue) - Unique, as they use some middle eastern spices on some of the pizzas (Hunter's Choice comes to mind).
Mexican
  • Los Compadres (convenience store with a line in the back) – Very authentic tortas and tacos – you might be the only English speaker in the place as far as customers
  • Rosepepper Cantina in East Nashville (Eastland Ave) – Nice location and okay food, great margaritas (EDIT)
Tacos (to segregate from Mexican)
  • Mas Tacos Por Favor in East Nashville (across from Pharmacy) – Cash only, great tacos at a great price
  • Taco Mamacita – Neat location, great tacos
  • Carniceria Y Taqueria Don Juan on Nolensville Road – Almost a little stand of a place
  • Bar taco in 12 south – A chain, but flexible in how you build the tacos (great for picky people)
Ethiopian
  • Awash on Murfreesboro – No menu, as she cooks Ethiopian homestyle
  • I have heard Abyssianian on Thompson is also good, but have not tried it
EDIT: This area of town is more a lunch destination, as it is not our best area (Madison also has issues, as do places near public housing)
Mongolian BBQ
  • Khan’s on 4th – Pretty straight forward. Pick your items, they cook it
Japanese
  • Black Dynasty in South Nashville – Only Ramen place I know. Used to do popups until they got this location (Have also heard Two Jack Ten is good)
  • Shabu Shabu Hot Pot and Grill on West End – I waited a long time for a Shabu Shabu place in Nashville
Sushi
  • Samurai on Elliston – I think they have excellent sushi
  • Ken’s Sushi – More about Ken, who worked in Green Hills years ago before opening his own place
  • Sam’s Sushi – in Acme Feed & Seed on 2nd. More the experience. We used to call Sam the sushi nazi
  • For higher end, I would go to Virago in the gulch
Thai
  • Siam Cuisine on White Bridge – Always one of my favorites
  • King Siam in Edgehill - Closer
  • I have also heard Thai Ni Yom in the L&L Market on Charlotte is good (open within the last year)
  • Smiling Elephant in the Waverly Area (8th south) - Added per user comment and good reviews
Korean
  • Korea House on Charlotte – Limited menu, but very authentic
  • Hai Woon Dai in Antioch (off I-24) – Also very authentic, but a hike for me
  • There are a few Korean BBQ places I have not tried, like Seoul Garden on Harding (used to have a great one on West End, but shut down years ago)
Vietnamese
  • Kien Giang on Charlotte – Cash only, great pho and bahn mi (VN Pho and Miss Saigon are also in this area of town – VN is more pick up IMO; Miss Saigon a bit more sit down)
  • Vinh Long on Murfreesboro – Also a good Pho spot, closes early
  • East Side Banh Mi in East Nashville – Focused on Banh Mi (thus the name?)
  • King Market on Haywood Lane (East 24) – Also some Laotian items
Chinese
  • Lucky Bamboo on Charlotte – Authentic Szechuan food
Greek
  • Sam’s Kabab Gyro in Bellevue – Large portions and a few of the employees entertain people
  • Chicago Style Gyros – Only the Harding Place location is great IMO
Middle Eastern
  • Epice in 12 South – Lebanese restaurant
  • House of Kabob on Thompson – Have not been since they moved and became more casual, however, so not sure if they dumbed down the menu (Persian)
  • Persi Kabob on Nolensville Road – Have not tried, but here they are excellence (very ethnic and casual - Persian)
  • Anatolia on White Bridge – traditional Turkish
  • Edessa Restaurant – Turkish and Kurdish food, very tasty
German – we are a hole (Bavarian Bier Garden in the Opryland mall is what most people say, but it is meh to me)
French
  • Marche in Five Points – Bistro style (same owner as Margot) CLOSED
  • Margot in Five Points – A bit more upscale (same owner)
  • Miel on Charlotte – French inspired high end (well plated)
  • Once Apon a Time in France – Newer bistro, have not tried, but have heard good things
Other
  • Peachtree Drive In in Woodbine – Try the Lamb Dip (unassuming place)
  • Papuseria Lucy’s on Nolensville – Salvadoran restaurant (there is also Honduras restaurant on Murfreesboro, but not as good in my book)
  • Anitjitos on Donelson south of Airport – Venezualan casual restaurant
  • Back to Cuba Café on Harding near I-65 – Only authentic Cuban I know of in Nashville

A suggestion to anyone in the GTA

I visited the Woodbine Mall in Toronto a few years ago, and didn't have my camera on me, so I didn't take any good photos. The few I took on my phone are bad, but will be linked below.
The place is just unsettling, with a lot of empty storefronts, including one when I visited that just had empty cardboard boxes piled floor to ceiling. This is accentuated by things like mismatched carpeting and the weird Christian frescos on the ceilings.
The real highlight, however, is the Amusement park. Inside the mall is a miniature amusement park, that has a combined fantasy/dinosaur theme. This includes a few rides, anamatronic/statues of animals, and a few now-closed themed store facades
The whole place has a very strange feel, and it's definitely worth a look once Ontario is out of lockdown. Things may have changed considerably, since my visit was in 2019, but it'll almost definitely still be worth a visit.

What each Season's credits can tell us about its themes (Longe Boye)

I am sure we have all seen at least one credits sequence for Fargo, listening to a fantastic song played at the end, and continuing until the guest stars are finished being credited. However, I am probably the only person in the world who finds the credits inherently interesting. I am an aspiring actor, though I do recognize that it is unlikely I will succeed, so I suppose it can't be helped. But I do think analysis of Fargo's credits has yielded some interesting results.
Season One, Starring Billy Bob Thornton, Allison Tolman, with Colin Hanks, and Martin Freeman: These characters, Lorne Malvo, Molly Solverson, Gus Grimly, and Lester Nygaard, are who the story is about. Every other character is in the orbit of these four, essential to telling their story, but not its protagonist. This season is the story of Lorne Malvo's one mistake. It is the story of the most eventful year in Molly Solverson's life. It is the story of why Gus Grimly quests to grow a pair, and why he eventually decides to borrow his wife's instead. And, most importantly I think, it is the story of how everyman Lester Nygaard frees himself of the rules of society, and the consequences of that. Before season four, this was the credits that sequence gave me the most trouble, because Billy Bob Thornton is credited first. In the second and third seasons, it is the everyman (or woman) in the middle who is given first billing, not the pure evil. And, as I said before, I think Lester's story is the most important and most compelling part of the season. But there's another way to look at it. A crime committed by Lorne Malvo is the inciting incident for each of these character’s stories. The murder of Sam Hess is what allows the thought of killing his wife to enter Lester’s head. And once it’s there, it’s a no brainer, for both him and his wife. The murder of Vern Thurman begins Molly’s investigation into Lester. And ignoring a stop sign causes Lorne to meet, and then threaten, Gus Grimly, who tries to stop his reign of terror. I also believe the honorifics have something to do with the characters, or at least the “and”, as Lester’s story is the most important in the season thematically. I’ve decided to ignore the “with”, and chalk it up to Colin Hanks having appeared in some big movies, and his dad having also done so. If you have a better idea, please tell me.
Season Two, Starring Kirsten Dunst, Patrick Wilson, Jesse Plemons, Jean Smart, and Ted Danson: There is less explanation needed here, I think. This is the story of how converging up the death of Rye Gerhardt lets Peggy Blumquist finally lead an extraordinary life. It is the story of why the investigation of the cover up of Rye Gerhardt’s death is possibly the most eventful year in Lou Solverson’s life, although it does have some competition. It is the story of how the cover up of the death of Rye Gerhardt makes Ed Blumquist realize that he may have hitched his wagon to the wrong filly. It is the story of how the death of its youngest son leads to the dissolve of the Gerhardt clan. And it is the story of how the investigation of the cover up of Rye Gerhardt’s death leads Hank Larsson to call in a favor from some friends. Technically it is Ed who kills Rye, but to he is not the lead. Why then is it not Ed? Ed killing Rye is not a choice. It was that or die. Peggy, twice in the first episode, makes the choice to cover up Rye’s death rather than confess, so she is our protagonist. There are four things of note this season when it comes to the credits that do not apply to the first. The thing that might first have jumped out at some of you is the fact that Mike Milligan is not starring this season, but rather a guest star. This is despite the fact that he appears in every episode. Mike is unique in being a character who appears in every episode of a season of Fargo, despite being credited as a guest star in all of them. Gale Kitchen is also in 10 episodes, and has the ignoble designation of being a co-star in all of them, although he does not talk on screen. This could just be because Bokeem Woodbine is the least well known actor, but Allison Tolman was more of an unknown than him, and she was up there with the rest of them. And he absolutely has an important arc. The season is the story of how Mike goes from a cowboy to a paper pusher. But its not because of the death of Rye Gerhardt. Either way, whether the Gerhardts were taken over by force or through buy-out, which I allege Rye Gerhardt is the lynchpin in, Mike would have wound up pushing papers. The next two interesting things are the credits for episode 7, and episode 8. In episode 7, Peggy Blumquist makes no appearance, and yet Kirsten Dunst is credited as the star of the episode. And in episode 8, Floyd Gerhardt makes no appearance, and as such Jean Smart is not credited. Both have importance in the episodes they don’t appear. Peggy’s crime is why the Gerhardt crime syndicate is in such disorder in episode 7, and Floyd’s assumption of power is why Dodd is in that cabin with Peggy. But Fargo is a crime show. Floyd taking power was not a crime, just a disruption. Another explanation is that Jean Smart is not there in the credits as Floyd Gerhardt, who is a powerful crime lord, but Floyd Gerhardt, who is The Gerhardt Crime Family. She is an idea who’s actions have consequences in every episode, while Peggy is a person whose actions have consequences in every episode. If we were going logically here, I think maybe the credits should be the opposite. But, these thing hold true for all following seasons, which I think this is the better explanation. The last thing of note this season is Hank being given an “and” credit. Him getting “and”, the second most prominent credit, causes you to reconsider his position in the season as one of the least prominent leads. I wouldn’t be surprised if of all of the leads, he appears in the fewest scenes throughout the season, especially if you count Floyd as the whole Gerhardt clan. He is important because he is reason the aliens are there. He talks about how he developed a means of universal communication, but leaves it up to interpretation whether that lead to him getting in contact with some little green men. The “and” is given, then, to a character who is also a concept.
Season Three, Starring Ewan McGregor, Carrie Coon, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Goran Bogdan, and David Thewlis. This season is the story of how hiring his parolee to rob his brother leads to the collapse and eventual end of Ray Stussy’s life. It is the story of how accepting some illicit money when times were tough puts Emmit Stussy at the center of an ideological, moral, and supernatural shitshow. It is the story of how the investigation of the crimes of two brothers with varying social classes but similar intelligences leads Gloria Burgle to find a purpose in life, and even a friend. It is the story of how the consequences of Nikki Swango pushing an air conditioner out the window to protect her fiancee from the supreme stupidity of his crimes leads to her being chosen by god to smite the wicked, and bungling it like everything else in her life. It is the story of how the killing of a bitter old man in Bumfuck, Minnesota because of a feud between two brothers who share nothing with him but a last name leads to the idea of cosmic justice, karma, and even actions having consequences is brought into question before God. And it is the story of how giving a loan to an idiot in Minnesota leads to V.M. Varga sitting across the table from a woman he barely recognizes, questioning for the first time the idea that he is invincible. The thing that actually got me to question if Fargo’s credits sequence had any rhyme or reason beyond billing politics was Goran Bogdan, who plays Yuri Gurka. He appears in 6 out of 10 episodes, and doesn’t even have a very prominent role. While he is a rather famous Russian actor, it is still very strange that he is billed alongside the main characters, if you don’t look at it through the previously established lens. The only reason Yuri Gurka is alive to participate in the season is because of karmic injustice: his ancestors go unpunished for their actions, and an innocent man is blamed for Yuri’s crimes in order to maintain law, and an idea that the state is always right. However, in the scene with Paul Marrane, one of these cosmic injustices is brought to a close, but the other is still open. Also, this analysis allowed me a breakthrough in looking at the final scene, which pretty much is Yuri Gurka. Here is the link. There is also Ewan McGregor’s dual role. Ray and Emmit aren’t even twins, as Ewan wears quite a few prosthetics to play Ray, and contacts and a wig to play Emmit. This is because this season is about two crimes, Ray’s hiring of Maurice and Emmit’s acceptance of Varga’s money. Also, in this season, four of the leads do not appear in one episode, but are still credited. Ewan and Thewlis both definitely do voices, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Mary Elizabeth Winstead were the voice of Minsky. Still, though, the characters don’t appear in person, so all of them are Peggys. Even Varga, who has nothing to do with Gloria yet. He’s the reason that Paul is there, and Paul gives Gloria some advice.
Season Four, Starring Chris Rock, Jessie Buckley, Jason Schwartzman, Ben Whishaw, Jack Huston, Salvatore Esposito, E’myri Crutchfield, Andrew Bird, Anji White, Jeremie Harris, Matthew Elam, Corey Hendricks, James Vincent Meredith, Francisco Aquaroli, Gaetano Bruno, Stephen Spencer, Karen Aldridge. Notice anything different this season? I think the analysis will have to come before the summary this time. Why are there so many more leads this season, and why are some characters leads and others not? Well, I think there are two main different groups of leads. One group is Rock through either Crutchfield or Esposito, and the other is Crutchfield or Bird through Aldridge. This distinction is between the ambassadors of certain ideas, and the other is those who hew to those groups. There is not a single character this season who appears in every episode, at least in new footage. Satchel’s voice appears in 7, and it seems like he will appear in the finale, and he isn’t even a guest at first. The credits persecution of Mike Milligan continues. So then, each character is a representative of an idea, like Floyd or Yuri. I’m sure you could find an idea that each character in the second group represents, but I’ve already rambled on too much, and intend to ramble more, so I’m going to go with the idea that if the second season had been produced with the philosophies of this season, the Gerhardts would be regulars in episodes they appear in. Loy Cannon represents his mob, as does Josto Fadda. Oraetta, a racist serial killer, of course represents America. Just kidding. She is polite society, and how it is not polite. She is peace, and how it is not peaceful. Odis is the law. Not just polite society’s law, in fact he has nothing to do with polite society. Not America’s law, he has nothing to do with America. He is batted about between all sorts of different rules, and different expectations, and he is stressed and stretched beyond any and all definition of sanity, and just longs for a time long gone by. Rabbi is an Irishman who was raised partially Jewish, and has lived most of his life as a criminal enforcer for the Italian mafia, who has a black adopted son, and is played by a gay Englishman. That’s the most American thing I’ve ever heard, making him America. Gaetano is not the Fadda family, but rather he is the conflict between self image, and the image others see.He sees himself as a though guy, while others just see a buffoon. Now, I think Ethelrida is purposely put at the end of that list, between her family who have less prominence than her, and the rest of the cast, who have greater consistent thematic importance than her. However, she appears in as many episodes as Loy, Josto, and Oraetta, or seems like she will, so I think she works as a lead. What, then, does she represent? I think it is Kansas City. It is a city down the middle, but more Missouri than Kansas. Ethelrida is as white as she is black, biologically speaking. But this has nothing to do with biology. In polite society, she is as black as they come. And throughout the season, we see Kansas City go on despite the mob war, despite all of the immigrants coming in, causing chaos. Now a brief analysis of all of the other leads, which I promised I wouldn’t do, as well as an analysis of the guest stars: The other Smutneys are pretty obviously part of Kansas City if Ethelrida is indeed part of group one, and if she is part of group two, all of them are part of America. The members of the Cannon Limited are pretty obviously part of The Cannon Limited, alongside The Fadda Family. Harvard is a part of polite society and peace, not quite so evil as Oraetta, but representative of the problem. Zelmare is, I think, a two-fer. While I’m not sure I trust Deafy to interpret the truth well, I trust him to tell it, so I believe that Zelmare’s presentation as a cool outlaw does not line up with her actual crime. But also, she is a black lesbian whose partner is half native, half Asian. That’s pretty god damn American. For the guest stars: Doctor Senator is an interesting case. He is a loyal servant of The Canon Limited, but that’s not his first choice. He is the kind of man who, given a better choice, would go somewhere else. And succeed. I think that is what separates him from Loy there. Loy, if allowed to enter polite society, would grow to be an Emmit Stussy, committing crimes behind closed doors, while Doc would be a lawyer version of our cop archetype. Deafy has a code, and he serves it unfailingly. Everyone else, their code serves them. That’s why no one in the sub-main cast represents law. But Deafy serves his code. I think there is an argument to be made for him being a part of polite society, but I think polite society requires some pretension, a little bit of that Gaetano spice, as after all Gaetano is the most polite character this season. And though his code may be different from that of others’, he serves it, and he knows what it is. He has no illusions. Swanee has no illusions about herself, though she may have illusions about Zelmare. And she has no code, and she is certainly not polite. You could say that she is America, but she only ticks 5 boxes that polite society rejects and I have decided that for the purpose of not throwing away this essay that I have spent five entire hours of my life on that you need at least 6 to be American. Dumini is also here. I think he’s a similar case to Doc. He would not wind up in crime were it not his only option. And he decides his loyalties lie with decency, not The Fadda Family. I think Don Fadda is a guest star because he doesn’t have to learn that getting fat and happy has blowback, which is the arc of the rest of his family. He learned from his past. But he still died, all the same. I love Satchel, Satchel is deeply strange. Satchel proves that my point is at least partially true. For the first 7 episodes in which he appears, Rodney L Jones III is credited as a co-star. Dumini has a similar arc of being unimportant, before becoming important. Going onward, he is a guest, and also receives a period after L. There are a few interesting co-stars with prominent roles to look at if we want to know why. There is Paolo Endrizzi, who joins up with Gaetano’s crew, and works as his translator. Still we don’t know much about him. He doesn’t make waves. And the two Cannon enforcers whose names we know, Mars Freeman and Banjo Rightway, they barely do anything at all. Passive servants. Then there is Mr. Snowman, who is either a passive servant of The Smutneys, Kansas City, or America, or quite possibly polite society. Either way, he doesn’t make waves. He just stands there, menacingly. So too did Satchel for the first 7 episodes. Not make waves, I mean. Only now has he begun to stand there menacingly. He was a passive servant of America. Now, he is an active servant of the future.
That’s all she wrote folks. Of course, its possible I’ve read too much into all of this. Still, there are some interesting things in there, I think, so this wasn’t an entirely fruitless exercise.

Hypothetical UofT Bubble similar to the NHL Bubble

So this is an scenario that will never actually happen, but I'd like your thoughts on the following idea:
UofT creates a bubble similar to the NHL bubble for all 65,000+ students, faculty, and employees (or however many are willing to be in it). The goal is to permit full in-person classes, co-curricular activities, and social interactions without any gathering restrictions, physical distancing, or masking requirements within the bubble (think of a mini New Zealand in downtown Toronto).
For this, the entire UofT campus will become a secure zone completely closed to the outside world. I've attached a map for reference. The black line is the perimeter, enforced by a massive fence and roadblocks. Vehicle and pedestrian access is only permitted for UofT people and emergency services, with the exception of the sections of the roads highlighted in red (Bloor Street, College Street, Spadina Avenue, and Queen's Park Crescent) within the bubble that will permit vehicle (but not pedestrian) access for outsiders who are merely passing through.
https://preview.redd.it/zi0cge13i8l51.png?width=837&format=png&auto=webp&s=74039c74107b489ad08d834839d3899ec1768ecf
Those that choose to enter the bubble will all be tested for COVID-19 and have to quarantine for two weeks. UofT will book tens of thousands of hotel rooms for everyone to stay in throughout the year. Even if you live in Toronto, if you enter the bubble you must stay in one of the approved hotels, student housing buildings, or other rental apartments to ensure the integrity of the bubble. You will not be permitted to live at home. Once you enter the bubble, you may not leave for the entire year except for medical appointments and other absolute emergencies. If you leave the bubble for unauthorized reasons you will not be permitted to return.
Of course, not everything will be within this bubble (eg. hotels/student housing will largely be outside of it). For all travel outside the bubble to approved locations, you may only travel with one of the 1000 Uber drivers that UofT will also hire to be a part of the bubble. No one from outside the bubble will be allowed to enter the faculty or student housing accommodations either, so say goodbye to your family for the whole year.
UofT will also negotiate with a variety of bars and restaurants, museums and other attractions (such as the ROM, AGO, Ripley's Aquarium, the Interactive Van Gogh Exhibit, and the CN Tower), and the City of Toronto Parks Department (for places like High Park, Woodbine Beach, the Toronto Islands, and the Scarborough Bluffs) to make a deal for all these places to designate one day a week (not all on the same day of course) where they are only open to UofT people, so that UofT people can visit some places outside the bubble to preserve their sanity. Of course, you must use the designated Uber service to go to these places. You can order all your groceries and meals to be delivered to you. You can also use the services of some select approved businesses (eg. The Printing House), again on a specific day of the week.
With all this, of course tuition will have to go up by God knows how much to pay for everything. Given all that, what are your thoughts on such an idea if it were to be implemented? Would you choose to enter the bubble? Or would you just stay at home and take online classes? And feel free to roast me for the logistical impracticality of such an undertaking and debate the effectiveness such a plan would have in preventing a COVID-19 outbreak on campus. Or perhaps discuss if this were expanded to include UTM and UTSC or Ryerson and OCAD for a larger Toronto campus bubble.

TOP 50 FARGO CHARACTERS

TOP 50 FARGO CHARACTERS: The Official Ranking (Based Solely On Opinion) of (Almost) Every Fargo Character (Because Season 4 Has 50 New Characters Alone and It’s Not Done Yet
I became a big Fargo fan this year, it helped me get through quarantine and I am now on the ride for season 4. It’s nice to be here so I’ll start off with a bang and give you what I believe to be the ranking of the Season 1-3 characters. I included, mostly all of them. Some got excluded like that lawyer or that cop, but for the most part the gang’s all here. And like the title says, it’s all opinion. But I’m right so let’s get going.
1.Lester Nygaard
Pretty much everything that Fargo is can be summed up with Lester’s turn to evil. If you want to introduce someone to the show, you begin with him. Lorne may steal the show, but Lester’s inner evil being unleashed it far more fascinating as a character study. It’s a strong arch and offers a very revealing role for Martin Freeman to sink his teeth in, and is arguably one of the retreads of the show from the movie that actually might be an improvement.
2.Gloria Burgle
The best version of the morally centered cop this show has to offer, comes very close to standing next to Marge. Her relationship to her work and her family, as well as her struggle with her inadequacies make for a fascinating and extremely captivating character to follow in a season full of madness. She is powerful and remains uptight in her investigation but her moments of fear and stress felt extremely real, and I appreciated this more than the two other variations on this list.
3.Mike Milligan
If I didn’t try to hide my bias, Bokeem Woodbine’s absolutely legendary and retro performance as the Kansas City wannabe-king would certainly rank at number one. There is nothing I don’t enjoy about his role. Made me a Bokeem fan for life. I would take a whole new season about him purely to bathe in new footage of this perfomance.
4.VM Varga
Evil incarnate has never been so enjoyable to watch as it is with David Thewlis delightfully monstrous antagonist. Season 3 has its flaws, but I could always count on Varga’s consistency for vile and disgustingly cruel anecdotes for becoming rich to sink my teeth in. One of the rare villains that has his shadow linger over the whole show. He is only closely followed by
5.Nikki Swango
Who not only manages to be the biggest badass of the season, but also manages to be the only character smart and quick enough to outthink Varga. I remember it being quite haunting when we see Varga off his game, and I could feel the power of Swango’s character throughout the rest of the season. Her undoubtable love for Ray only provides more of a reason to root for this character’s revenge. Undoubtedly the best antihero the show has to offer (sorry #26 fans)
6.Lou Solverson
Now I LOVE both versions of Lou, they’re both adorable and endearing. Season 2 is certainly fleshed out more and given a lot more to do, but with that season in hindsight it’s very interesting to see the inner cop Carradine carried on in scenes such as his encounter with Lorne or his desire to help his daughter, sitting on the porch just like he always has. Wilson brought a much needed charm that made him an extremely reliable character for all of season 2. Both are extremely strong contenders for the show’s best boy scout.
7.Lorne Malvo
Some may be upset at his ranking, but don’t get me wrong Lorne is everything. His dark humor mixed with his love for violence makes for an eerie and hilarious antagonist for season 1. His humor is more successful than any other character.
8.Ray Stussy
Baby Ray, such a tragic character. This one’s here for me guys. Ray’s arch and its conclusion made me realize how much I loved him, and at the same time made me realize how much I don't have a very similar character. He was very endearing throughout his course in the season, and I wish him the best wherever he is.
9.Bear Gerhardt
Another strangely endearing and tragic character who is probably the most relatable and understandable member of the Gerhardt Family. Definitely my favorite, and his dark turn towards the end of the season just highlights the downfall of the entire family structure.
10.Gus Grimly
Molly is the star of Season 1 but I’d say Gus ended up being a more compelling character for me. He had one of the more satisfying arcs and I enjoyed seeing a character who was just...not good at his job but wanted to do the right thing. Hank’s very friendly performance added to the heart of the show and boy what a satisfying ending for him.
11.Hanzee Dent
I love rooting for murderous psychopaths, but man wasn’t he a badass? Hanzee’s storyline of oppression and emancipation was a storyline that I enjoyed its entirety of, even if I was somewhat disappointed with the seeming lack of a resolution surrounding the events with the grocery store. Although, I don’t mind the Moses Tripoli thing, the Wrench/Numbers part of that scene is what was a stretch for me.
12.Rye Gerhardt
How do you steal an entire season with only one episode? Kieran Culkin’s performance as Rye deserves an Emmy and you can’t tell me he doesn’t. He’s hilarious, and I think he has the perfect amount of screentime for his type of character. “There’s two ways this can go.”
13.Dodd Gerhardt
The most despicable Gerhardt? Definitely, but Jeffery Donovan is incredibly entertaining to root against and has some of the funniest moments of the season. His relationships to the other characters also creates great intrigue.
14.Hank Larsson
Is there any other man you would want by your side in the battle? I wish it was him saying FUBA with Lou in the end instead of who we got, but man is Ted Danson just great in this show. First of all he somehow FITS Fargo perfectly, but his character is just very dependable. Very similar to...
15.Betsy Solverson
Only second to Hank is Lou’s reliable wife is Betsy, whose impending doom gives the family structure of season 2 quite the shake up it needs. It offers Lou a chance to express emotions that his beefy facade attempts to hide, and her willingness to assist and take arms is just lovable. Speaking of dedication...
16.Sy Feltz
Sy...poor Sy. He warned Emmit from the beginning and sticks with him even when he is accused of being in bed with the enemy. He had no reason to stay by his side except for his morals and ethics and the fact that he just cares about his friend. His ending is one of the one things in that show that truly makes me sad when I think about it. I don’t know if I’d want a different ending, but SY DESERVED BETTER.
17.Molly Solverson
Molly is everything she needs to be. She’s honest, she’s hardworking, and despite what everyone says about her the most surprising part of her character is she knows when to stop. In the end, she has moved on. Lester is the same character, he is the same evil. Molly knows this and in the end, knows she can’t help him. Their battle gave a compelling season-long arc that kept me motivated to come back each week when I originally watched it, and even though Lou and Gloria get first place for me in the ranking, Molly’s impact can not be stated. I’d love to see her get a drink with Marge.
18.Simone Gerhardt
Simone’s 70s spirit is a ride. She certainly has the most spunk out of the Gerhardts, gives a surprisingly emotional performance, and gives arguably the best line of the entire show.
19.Emmit Stussy
JUDAS. Only high on this list because of McGreggor’s excellent performance, multiple sides and shadows of emotion make him such a compelling part of this show. Emmit is incredibly hard to read, and every episode is a new kind of feeling about him. But there’s no question, in his final scene, I cheered. He doesn’t deserve anything like what Ray and Nikki have let me just say that.
20.Peggy Blumquist
Peggy is frustrating, but that’s what makes her compelling. On one hand you can see Peggy’s side of things, but on the other you can understand Ed. Peggy gets the upper hand here because she represents a lot of other things in this world, and Dunst was able to bring enough reliability and honesty to mix with the crazy.
21.Karl Weathers
Although I always enjoy Nick Offerman, I was a little worried at this character’s initial appearance. Noah Hawley has a knack for writing some one-note characters as you’ll see later on in this list, but what turned me around was his appearance in Episode 6, most specifically his intense interaction with Bear. His surprising intelligence and wit in this interaction was really compelling.
22.Floyd Gerhardt
Being a Watchmen fan, it was awesome to see Laurie Blake to show up to kick some more ass in this show. Floyd’s a complicated character, and I enjoyed her gradual descent into loss of control, both mentally and physically. She was a stone-cold power figure, who honestly I wouldn’t fuck with.
23.Ed Blumquist
Jesse Plemmons gives a grade-A performance in this one, and his character has just as many twists and turns emotionally as Peggy gets to have, though I wish they had gone further down his routes at times. We see his dedication, where he breaks and where he picks his feet up. But I don’t know, I just would have personally liked to have seen more.
24.The Kitchen Brothers
Love my Prague rock-band boys. Of the henchmen’s they’re my favorite. It’s just a personal preference because I love their style. They also manage to be completely badass without saying a single word.
25.Winnie Lopez
So, I don’t know the general consensus on this character, but I kind of loved her. She and Gloria are a badass team, it was nice to have someone working somewhat directly close with the main cop of the show. You know in Season 1, Molly had Gus but she was mostly on her own and Lou had help from a few other people but again mostly had to fly solo. Winnie believed in Gloria and wanted to do what she could to help her. I’m gonna think about how much I love them real quick…………..that was nice. Alright, time to explain myself with this next one.
26.Mr. Wrench
I know fan favorite Mr. Wrench being placed at 26 is making some people tweak right now, but listen….he’s great. I agree, he’s entertaining. Wrench and Numbers, they’re some great blokes. BUT LISTEN…….Season 1 they just didn’t grab me. I don’t know, like I enjoyed their scenes because I thought they were a good dynamic hitman duo with enough quirks to warrant their inclusion but I did not leave the show wanting more from them. It wasn’t till Season 3 that I found myself in a greater appreciation for him. Because you know, apart of me was like, “Oh boy Noah is really pulling out of his ass for this one.” But at the same time, he and Nikki made a damn good team. And if I can go with other coincidences in this show, I can go with that one. Please don’t burn me alive, I admit he’s entertaining but there are way more compelling characters in my opinion. Actually, one I would credit with being just that is...
27.Charlie Gerhardt
Who gave one of the most surprising performances of the season. I enjoyed his arch of wanting to be apart of the family, and although I felt like his conclusion was somewhat lackluster after he’s in the cage, I still enjoyed his overall inclusion and I think that’s due in part to Allan Dobrescu’s natural charisma.
28.Paul Marrane
I was so happy when Ray Wise showed up, and his supernatural nature seems fitting. I think he was served better than aliens if we’re having that debate.
29.Joe Bulo
I enjoyed his interactions with other characters (Milligan, Floyd) more than his character overall. A very Fargo crime boss.
30.Meemo and Yuri Gurka
Though some would argue they deserve separate spots as they’re two very different forms of crazy, but I feel about the same of both. They are expounded upon enough without being overly exaggerated and provide some good thrills/scares. I think I like Meemo’s style here though, so sorry Yuri you’re 30.5.
31.Mr. Numbers
Adam Goldberg is an actor I enjoy seeing whenever he shows up and that is no more in effect than with his role as Numbers. The only issue is I couldn’t tell you a single thing about his character except for his devotion to and relationship with his partner.
32.Bill Oswalt
Bob Odenkirk will be remembered as one of the finest actors of his time, no question. It’s a shame his role but more one-note than noteworthy but it just shows his power to hone in a good performance despite the content.
33.Don Chumph
GLENN. HOWERTON. Any Sunny fan was happy to have him, and though his exaggerated ego is a bit much, it offered a lot of laughs and a good role for Howerton to play in between Philly seasons. Obvious bias, let’s move on.
34.Noreen Vanderslice
I enjoyed her presence. Solid dark comedy. Not much else.
35.Pepper and Budge
In moments I loved them, in moments I could’ve gone without them. Key and Peele are delightfully entertaining (I love seeing Peele act in general now that it’s so rare), but sometimes they just feel horribly out of place. This show is filled with character actors but this inclusion just always felt weird to me. They do offer one of the best moments of the show, that being the car scene with Lester.
36.Stravos Milos
I guess he’s not a fan favorite, but it helped that I enjoy Oliver Pratt enough to enjoy his inclusion in the show. I also appreciate at least one real and honest reference to the movie being put in there. If any storyline from the film could continue, it’s obviously the money and it provided a nice welcome into the world before the craziness of season 2.
37.Vern Thurman
Included because he left such a charming impression.
38.Maurice LeFay
I hear the criticisms of being one note, although I enjoyed seeing Scoot show up if only for one episode. What a killer way to go out though.
39.Sonny Greer
One of those other one note characters, this time one that serves much less of a purpose. Karl outshines him in every scene.
40.Greta Grimly
A heartwarming addition to the Season 1 storyline. Next.
41.Chaz Nygaard
Unlikable and uncharamastic but his blissful ignorance is a welcome folly for Lester’s rampage.
42.Moe Dammick
The problem with this character isn’t even that they repeated the same cliche from Season 1 with Odenkirk’s character but rather that they did nothing to add or subvert expectations with it. He ends up pretty much staying the same way throughout the season, even after multiple moments where he should be convinced otherwise. He is simply the same character with a harsher edge, which is a shame because Shea Whigham is another one of those actors who I normally just love whatever role he’s in, so this one was a little disappointing.
43.Ben Schmidt
Everyone’s favorite police yuppie. Absolutely terrible cop, incredibly hilarious to watch him fail. “You’re a shit cop, you know that?”
44.Linda Park
Offers Lester one of his most fucked up moments, but did not offer much in terms of a character outside of a couple of laughs.
45.Donny Mashman
Down low because he has no backbone.
46.Constance Heck
Gave a great performance in her scene with Hanzee, but did not get much out of her little screen-time.
47.Gina and Sam Hess
Characters that exist solely for the purpose of progressing Lester’s character arch. Toss em to the curb.
48.Ruby Goldfarb
That twist was just lame and not shocking, I’m sorry. Like it happened, and I was just like...okay? Who cares at this point. Did not need it. Also very one note.
49.Ennis Stussy/Thaddeus Mobley
Not even the worst performance wise just, frustrating. There are certain times where I give Noah Hawley his side roads even if they end up going nowhere just because I enjoy the world of Fargo, but Thaddeus’s storyline is just so unnecessary. I enjoyed the inclusion of the story with the robot and how it related to Gloria’s arch, BUT THAT IS NOT ENOUGH SIR. Realizing I’ve rewatched every episode of Fargo except S03E03 oops.
50.Skip Sprang
The most annoying and useless typewriter salesman in the world. I could watch Mike torture him for hours.

Reviews from my growing collection, Part 2

About Me:
You can find Part 1 of this series here. I'm totally new to perfumes (except, this is probably getting less true now), except for a tiny little vial of White Shoulders that my grandma had in her stuff and things cupboard, so this has been a learning experience.
Personally, I want to smell like realistic forests, sunny fields, rainy days, flowers, and tea. Not necessarily all at once. :P
These have all been tested at least thrice: within the first week of arriving, after a couple weeks of resting, and after a month of resting, although some of these I have worn more than that. This batch I received in late September. The next batch of reviews will be ones I received in early October and early November and should be up in DecembeJanuaryish.

House: Poesie
Scent: Strange Little Girl
Notes: tart blueberry, crushed summer leaves, moist earth
First Impression:
Honestly, kind of soapy. Not like, laundry soap, but bar soap. This one needs rest. Real bad. My husband says he can smell a lye-like base in my perfumes, but this is the only one where I agree. It might be the leaves that I smell, but I want more blueberry and dirt dangit!
Rested:
11/04/2020 - Wet: I do kind of get blueberry now, and it’s unripe blueberry, but sharply, sweetly, tart? Still no dirt. The sharpness is fading now, and it’s definitely more fruity, but it doesn’t smell nice to me. This is not what I want to smell like, sadly. I really wanted to like this more. And the more I wear it, the less I like it so I’m going to scrub this off.

House: Poesie
Scent: Pemberley
Notes: a stunning English garden where crushed tomato leaf, flowering woodbine & wisteria, peony petals, oak and ivy leaf blend seamlessly
First Impression:
It’s soft and greenly floral. If I close my eyes, I envision green vines with pink flowers. Gentle and really nice, but kind of strong on first application. Upon research, “woodbine” is another word for honeysuckle. I don’t really smell honeysuckle, so maybe this is mostly wisteria? I like this, but I’m going to let it rest.
Rested:
11/04/2020 - Wet: Flowery. This one hasn’t changed much, I feel. Still mostly wisteria and green. This one isn’t bad, but it’s not for autumn. I would wear this outside in the late spring when it isn’t quite summer, but it’s softly warm and fresh outside. Not in autumn when it’s windy and rainy.
Can't rate properly yet.

House: Solstice Scents
Scent: Blackburn Farmstead
Notes: Blackberry Jam, Boysenberry Preserves, Vanilla Bean, Creamy Vanilla and a touch of Vanilla Musk
First Impression:
Holy vanilla jammy goodness, Batman! It’s really nice. A little too sweet for September, maybe, but not to the point of being cloying. I mostly get sweet fruit with vanilla which is pretty true to the notes so yah. After a while it turns into vanilla candle, which is sad. I wonder if it would be good layered with something else.
Rested:
11/06/2020 - Wet: This is still so sweet. The blackberry was super prominent up front, but that’s already fading to let the vanilla take first place. This rather smells like someone tried to make jam with only the roughest of recipes, and they just threw in like ten whole vanilla beans, an entire container of baking vanilla, waaaaay too much sugar, and then undercooked it so it’s still runny and just smells like straight sugar and vanilla with a little bit of berries. As it dries, it just goes straight sweet vanilla dollar store candle.

House: Haus of Gloi
Scent: Apothecary
Notes: A pure essential oil blend of: Lemongrass, rosemary, blood cedar, bitter basil, lavender and the tiniest drop of vetiver.
First Impression:
Wet it’s all rosemary and lemon balm. Spicy citrusy, but dry it is allll cedar and I love it. Might actually give this to my husband because cedar makes me think of him and he would wear it well. But also I just want to wear it myself. FS possible because this is what I want to smell like. I just wish it were a little stronger with better longevity.
Rested:
11/07/2020 - Wet, still very strong rosemary which quickly gives way to the lemon grass, which then turns into Pledge. Just Pledge. I’m sure the cedar is still there somewhere, but the Lemon Pledge lasts long enough that this is not worth it to me. It was such beautiful cedar too. :(
2/5, utter sadness

House: The Little Book Eater
Scent: Emily of New Moon
Notes: Lilac • Vanilla • Brown Sugar • Balsam • Spruce
First Impression:
Straight-up brown sugar. Very disappointing, but it did just come on a trip. I’ll let it rest for a few weeks and then retry. GIVE ME THE LILAC AND SPRUCE!
Rested:
09/29/2020 - Wet there’s definitely a floralness in there now, as well as maybe some treeishness, but dry it’s still brown sugar. Worse, after a few hours, it’s all dollar-store vanilla candle. My skin chemistry might have a problem with vanilla. :/
11/09/2020 - Wet it’s still floral and sugary and then, oo, some spicy evergreen, and it’s holding that spicy evergreen with sugar. There’s definitely lilac in there too because it tickles my nose the same way Blooddrop Barn Owl does. And now the evergreen is gone and lilac is the prominent note. This is… nice now? We’ll see if the vanilla comes out to play. An hour later, and the vanilla and sugar is there, but mixed with the lilac. Maybe the lilac is starting to fade, but it’s not generic vanilla candle yet. About four hours later, it’s mostly vanilla, but faint enough that it’s not offensive. Surprise keeper!
3.5/5, surprised Pikachu face

House: The Little Book Eater
Scent: Anne of Green Gables
Notes: Earl Grey Tea • Apple • Pear • Anise • Vanilla
First Impression:
Really beautiful. Mostly apple and cinnamon, which I think is my brain being weird. Apple, you say? Well, that other spice must be cinnamon! Except when I think about it, it’s definitely not. XD Delicate and fruity but with a nice tannic undertone. Almost a little dusty? Will let it rest some more.
Rested:
11/09/2020 - Wet, strong apple/pear. I can’t really distinguish between the two, but I get whiffs of both. There are wisps of anise underneath. Sniffed up close, it comes across as very fallish and spicy. When dry, it comes across as a dusty spice, with a little tannic undertone, and a certain brightness (possibly remnants of the fruit, or maybe the bergamot from the tea). I really enjoy this scent.
4/5, makes me want to hug a birch tree and soliloquize to it

Raising a baby on major arterial road - air pollution?

Hey TO,
My husband and I are having a baby in a few weeks. We're also moving in a few weeks; with the pandemic and a baby on the way, we just needed more space.
We have two options that we like. However I'm worried about the traffic at both.
One is directly on Woodbine, right by the Cosburn intersection.
Another is in Don Mills, close enough to the DVP that you can hear it (which bugs me a bit).
Bit worried about air quality at both... We're leaning toward Woodbine because it's closer to friends, etc, but want some thoughts.
Anyone have experience with Woodbine and Cosburn? How busy does it get?
Anyone have a baby near a busy street with traffic? Worried about the air quality at all?
Thanks :)

The Red Mile Analysis 10/9/2020

The Red Mile Analysis 10/9/2020
LOCK OF THE DAY: 2 Party Whip (RACE 11)
PRICE PLAY OF THE DAY: 3 Jula Shes Magic (RACE 2)
Race 1
1 Pettycoat Business
4 Candy On The Beach
6 Keystone Eureka
The 1 is dropping, has faced too tough since arriving here, and should fair much better with this group. The 4 is dropping, had no chance like everyone else in last against the great Party Girl Hill, and should compete well in here. The 6 is dropping and getting post relief, should have a much better chance to win just like the top two choices.
Race 2
3 Jula Shes Magic
1 Dip Me Hanover
6 Fashion Charmer
The 3 ran good fourth off of a good qualifier, if she can stay on stride, improve a little and with the better pilot, she could upset this group. The 1 was very disappointing in last to not beat this group especially with the 6 not being on her game, I expect her to catch a helmet this time and should be right there at the wire again. The 6 was also disappointing last time out but was sick before that so probably needed a race, expect a better performance and to be much more competitive.
Race 3
7 Test Of Faith
5 Caviart Audrey
2 Notorious Pink
The 7 has been racing flawlessly, last time out was just an easy win for her, should be very tough to beat even with the two shipping in from Woodbine-Mohawk Park. The 5 won a very prestigious race at Woodbine-Mohawk on disqualification (missed by a head), if she is okay after that hard fought, tough trip, quick fractions in last she will give the 7 trouble. The 2 put up those fast fractions in last and if she is okay after those fractions she should be very competitive as well.
Race 4
3 Venerate
1 Southwind Tyrion
7 In Range
The 3 has won back to back huge races (KYSS CHAMP & Mohawk Million), should be looking to make it three in row as long as he does not break. The 1 ran a good third in last, closed in 26.3 and should be fast enough to put in a bid as a minor upsetter. The 7 was disappointing in last, expect this one to improve off that effort and has a chance if one of the top 2 don't race well.
Race 5
2 Fire Start Hanover
1 Odds On Whitney
5 Blue Diamond Eyes
The 2 has won four in a row and seems to be winning without much pressure, should race well again. The 1 was disappointing in last against the 2, gets a better post and should be more aggressively driven this time, has a chance to turn the tables with improvement. The 5 was outkicked by the 2 in the stretch in last, should race well once again.
Race 6
4 Tugboat Tuffy
10 Gettin Serious
3 Caviart Guilia
The 4 had ran a great qualifier on 8-8 but then broke and ran a good but very slow qualifier on 8-30, I think this race goes through him, if he breaks it is wide open otherwise he should be good enough to take this field especially since he won 8 of 23 races last year. The 10 is facing much weaker, has ran into way too tough of horses here at the Red Mile, I look at the 9-1 race as a similar field to this one that he finished second in, should have a chance in here. The 3 ran a good and fast enough qualifier to take these, she had faced similar here on 9-8 and 8-30 and ran just okay in those, should have a chance nonetheless.
Race 7
5 Cuatro De Julio
6 Delayed Hanover
7 Sonofamistery
The 5 ran a great second in last, is facing weaker and if he can stay flat should have the best chance to take top honors. The 6 ran great in last, closing in a crisp 26.3, he should continue to get faster and will give the 5 trouble. The 7 broke in last, won back to back races before that and if he can stay flat and improve then he will have a small chance against the top 2.
Race 8
4 Isowantapetrock
3 Fashion Hill
8 PJ's Legacy
The 4 is dropping and switching to the mile track, and has been closing fast at the half mile tracks in back to back races, should be flying down the long stretch and contend well in here. The 3 is dropping as well, and is fast enough to take these as well. The 8 ran a great qualifier, closing in 26.1 and could upset the top 2 with some improvement.
Race 9
1 Moonstone S
2 Zenith Stride
5 Fly Light
The 1 is facing similar to last where he ran a good third, should continue to improve in his third start off the bench, and should contend well in here. The 2 is dropping, ran a good second against similar two back, and should contend well in here. The 5 ran a good second against similar finishing ahead of the 1 in last, should improve in his second start on the track, and has a good chance to pull off the minor upset.
Race 10
4 Light Blue Movers
3 Caviart Emma
7 Cover Girl
The 4 is dropping, is only his fourth start with Ake, ran a good second last time out and if he can stay flat then he is probably the ONE TO BEAT. The 3 is dropping, has fast enough times to take these. The 7 is dropping and seems to be the best of the rest.
Race 11
2 Party Whip
6 Saint Albray
1 Pristine Beauty
The 2 is taking a massive class drop, adding lasix, and ran a good second against much tougher three back at the Big M, ONE TO BEAT! The 6 is dropping too, came home in a quick 27.2 in last and with some improvement could be a small upsetter. The 1 is dropping, gets a much better post and if the 2 falters and with some improvement could win at a price.

THE PIGGYBACK MURDER - THE USA'S OLDEST "SOLVED" COLD CASE.

The Oldest “Solved” Cold Case and How It Went Unsolved Again: Maria Ridulph
It was December 3rd 1957 when seven-year-old Maria Ridulph went missing on a street corner in Sycamore, Illinois and five months later Maria’s remains were found 100 miles from Sycamore in Woodbine, Illinois. It wouldn’t be until more than 50 years later that the case had what was initially thought of as closure – this turned out to be false closure.
The case was seemingly solved in September 2012 when the police would convict a murderer for the abduction and murder of Maria. This would then be overturned in March 2016 and Maria’s neighbour Jack McCullough would be declared an innocent man in April 2017.
To date the murder remains unsolved and the mystery of Maria Ridulph continues to baffle the Chicago area…
It will more than likely forever be a cold case.
A Piggyback Ride
Seven-year old Maria Ridulph was playing with best-friend Kathy on the first snowfall of the year; when a mysterious man offered Maria a piggyback ride…
Maria’s friend Kathy was the last to see Maria Ridulph alive and the last she saw of Maria was a strange man hoisting her on his back and trotting off down the street. Kathy had gone inside to get some gloves to fight against the harsh cold and when she came back outside on the street, both the man and Maria were gone.
Kathy afterwards went to the Ridulph house to tell them that Maria was missing. Initially the family thought that Maria was hiding and sent Maria’s older brother Charles out to search for her.
It was an hour later that the Ridulph family realised that something was up, and the police were notified beginning a police search and the FBI being called in. Soon, it seemed like the whole of Illinois was searching for the missing seven-year old.
And while Kathy was elated some 54 years later at the news that the man was finally apprehended, she must now continue with the inner torment that she watched someone in plain sight “take away my best friend”. At the time of the abduction the sun was setting, and it was near dark as the two girls were playing “duck the cars.” Investigators pin this time down as around 6.30 pm.
“JOHNNY”
The man was called “Johnny” (or so he told the little girls).
According to Kathy; “Johnny” was 24 and not married. Kathy stated that “Johnny” had blonde hair, bad teeth and a high-pitched voice.
Going back to a time before Amber alerts and faces on the back of milk carts, the search for Maria had even caught the attention of FBI Chief J Edgar Hoover, USA President Eisenhower and garnered national media attention – somewhat unprecedented in those days for a missing child (at least in comparison to today). There were various public appeals from the Ridulph family and widespread investigations across Illinois which including all known sex offenders, transients and another man that had previously offered piggyback rides to children.
Maria was later found by mushroom-picking tourists almost half a year after that fateful piggyback ride; Maria was found wearing a shirt, undershirt and socks. At this point Maria was decomposed and skeletal. Maria had to be identified by her parents because of her familiar brown-socks.
It was not until 50 years later that an autopsy could determine the cause of death as being that of Maria being stabbed in the throat various times.
John Tessier was at the top of the suspect list from the very beginning of Maria’s disappearance.
A neighbour of the Ridulph family, and one of seven children, John was considered an outsider and had been described as “creepy” by the community. In 1957 Tessier passed a lie detector test and the file was closed with the report noting: “No further investigation is being conducted regarding the above suspect.”
At the time the police did not have a schoolbook photograph and therefore Kathy was not asked to identify John Tessier.
That’s The Man
John was born in Northern Ireland in 1939 to a British sergeant – John moved to the USA at the age of seven and grew up in Illinois. Between the Maria case, John lived a fairly quiet life. Serving in the military for thirteen years where he rose to the rank of captain, he was also a police officer and worked in security. It was in 1982 where John first fell afoul of the law when he was charged with statutory rape which was later down graded into a misdemeanour.
In 1994 John Tessier changed his name to Jack McCullough. Apparently a tribute to his deceased mother.
The case was actually re-opened as a result of John’s own mother who believed John to be guilty. Eileen Tessier said in 1994, while on her deathbed, that John had killed a number of little girls and asked John’s half sister Janet to tell someone. Another of John’s sisters Mary confirmed that she had heard her mother say: “He did it”.
John however had a fragmented and broken relationship with his mother, which includes incidents of threatening and violent behaviour from the mother and John had chosen not to attend her funeral when she died. There is every possibility that the “confession” was made by John’s mother out of either spite or in a drug-induced delirium.
Janet in the meantime had made multiple attempts to get law enforcement to investigate her own half-brother, constantly contacting state police to look into John.
It wasn’t until 2008; when Janet sent a lengthy email to the Illinois State Police did, they decide to re-open the cold case.
State Police reviewed the evidence and found testimony from neighbours of John’s seemingly erratic and strange behaviour around young girls (which included giving another young girl a piggyback and refusing to put the girl back down); which probably did not sit well next to the previous conviction and rape charges. John is just one of the many “outsiders” targeted by law enforcement as a perfect suspect. That being said; there were definite factors that could have had John fingered.
Everything seemed to go against John upon the re-opening of the case when Kathy personally picked out John from a picture line up and stated: “that’s the man”.
Despite all of this, John had a strong alibi. John Tessier was enlisting in the United States Airforce in Rockford, Illinois on the day in question.
It was confirmed by recruitment officers that they had spoken with John at that time. A collect call was traced in Rockford, Illinois which was 40 miles from the abduction site and an un-used train ticket to Rockford was found in John’s possession.
The timeline recommended by state investigators was one where Tessier kidnapped Maria and then drove (the unused ticket) to Rockford in time to make the call at 6.57 pm and meet with the same recruiting officers at 7.15 pm. Under this timeline it was determined that Maria was kidnapped at 6.20 pm.
John was called in for questioning with the police. The interview can be seen here which highlighted some of the discrepancies in John’s (now Jack) initial story and his seemingly hostile manner.
https://www.cbsnews.com/video/jack-mccullough-questioned-about-1957-maria-ridulph-disappearance/#x
Maria’s body was then exhumed but there was no DNA evidence that could be found on Maria’s remains and nothing to link John using forensics.
With different inmates testifying that John had discussed killing Maria to them (with two different accounts of the cause of death – neither similar to Maria’s actual death) and with the details of John’s alibi withheld during trial, it seemed that John Tessier was doomed at trial.
John was convicted by a jury for the abduction and murder of Maria and given a life sentence. He was sentenced at 73 years old; so was set to die in prison as a guilty man.
APPEAL
Acting for himself John filed a petition against his murder conviction. This was dismissed as frivolous.
It wasn’t until the new State’s Attorney Richard Schmack reviewed the evidence extensively that he discovered that for Tessier to kill Maria was impossible, this included reviewing the collect call and the distance from Rockford to Sycamore.
In April 2016 the murder charge was dismissed without prejudice and on 12th April 2017 John Tessier was officially declared an innocent man and released from prison.
https://edition.cnn.com/interactive/2013/08/us/oldest-cold-case/ch2.html
UNSOLVED
The Maria Ridulph murder had gone from unsolved to cold to solved and back to unsolved. And now we remain back at unsolved.
And while there was a feeling of tremendous relief for the likes of Kathy, the last witness to see Maria alive, and the remaining Ridulph family at the conviction of John, there is a large sense of injustice that John Tessier was convicted when all evidence seemed to point away from him.
Maria Ridulph’s murder had been the eldest solved cold case in the USA and is now just that “unsolved.”
Johnny is now living in a retired community centre where he once worked and is currently in the process of suing law enforcement for the unfair conviction.
THE OTHER SUSPECT
William Henry Redmond was a ‘carny’ with an ability to make young girls vanish in his presence. There was numerous stories of girls seemingly going missing whenever Redmond was around which included a ten-year-old in Ohio and an eight-year-old in Pennsylvania (and yet no convictions).
A likely sounding suspect; Redmond is now dead, and the evidence appears entirely circumstantial, with very little to go on against Redmond except that he looked like Kathy’s description of Johnny and has a suspicious history around children.
IN POPULAR CULTURE
The case is one of the most famous unsolved murders in American history and has been subject to many depictions in culture which include a CNN web series called “Taken” and a true-crime book released in 2014 by Charles Lachman called Footsteps in the Snow.

The 1 gets post relief, should improve second time on the track and should get a good trip and compete well in here. Race 12
1 Sonofamistery
3 Jack's Fire
2 Royson's Punch
The 1 is three for three over this track, needs to improve a little to beat the 3. The 3 won in last, moves to the mile oval where he won four back defeating the 2, finished well in front of the 1 at the Red Mile two back and seems to be the one to beat. The 2 has been hitting the board consistently and should compete well in here.
Race 13
6 All American N
3 Broadway Promise
7 Explosive
The 6 is dropping, if he can stay flat he will win, ONE TO BEAT! The 3 raced well four back, should improve off that okay effort and compete better today than in last. The 7 is facing similar, has raced just okay since arriving here but seems better than the rest.
